O homem da sociedade moderna tinha uma identidade bem definida e localizada no mundo social e cultural. No entanto, uma mudança estrutural está fragmentando e deslocando as identidades culturais de classe, de sexualidade, de etnia, de raça e de nacionalidade. As velhas identidades, que por tanto tempo estabilizaram o mundo social, estão em declínio. Se antes elas eram sólidas localizações, nas quais os indivíduos se encaixavam socialmente, hoje se encontram com fronteiras menos definidas, o que provoca no indivíduo uma “crise de identidade”.O propósito deste livro é, portanto, explorar algumas das questões sobre a identidade cultural na modernidade tardia e avaliar se existe mesmo essa “crise de identidade”, em que ela consiste e em que direção está indo. Ao desenvolver seus argumentos, Stuart Hall introduz certas complexidades e examina alguns aspectos contraditórios que a noção de “descentração” do sujeito, em sua forma mais simplificada, desconsidera.

Resumo A Geografia Humana, que só recentemente desenvolveu maior interesse pelo território, associa-o, conforme as circunstâncias, às idéias de poder e controle, à natureza do laço social ou ao papel das representações simbólicas. O interesse das ciências sociais pelos problemas de identidade cresceu paralelamente ao interesse dos geógrafos pelo território: a identidade está vinculada à cons-trução do "self" ou às relações com o outro, e permanece como uma noção elusiva. O território serve como uma base para sentimentos de identidade de diversos modos. A transição para a pós-mo-dernidade desafia as forças por trás de identidades tradicionais, que induzem a uma busca de identifi-cação para objetos ou paisagens. Isso provoca o fim das filosofias da História sobre as quais foram construídas as identidades e os territórios de outrora. A subseqüente proliferação de discursos iden-titários expressa o déficit de sentido de mundo de hoje e pode se revelar perigoso por suas conse-qüências políticas. Abstract Human geography, which developed only recently an interest for territory, links it, according to the circunstances, to the idea of power and control, the nature of social link, or the role of symbolic representations. The interest of social sciences for the problems of identity grew at the same time than that of geographers for territory: identity is linked to the construction of self or the relations with others, and remains an elusive notion. Territory serves as a basis for identity feelings according to variable modes. The transition to postmodernity challenges the forces behind traditional identities, which induces a frienzed quest of identification to things or landscapes. It provokes the end of the philosophies of history, upon which were built the identities and territories of yesterday. The ensuing proliferation of identitary discourses expresses the deficit of sense of the world of to-day, and may be dangerous through its political consequences. As presentes transformações tecnológicas, econômicas e sociais têm se traduzido em profundas mudanças nos meios e modos de vida dos indivíduos. Tais mudanças têm sido analisadas de maneiras diversas. Enquanto alguns denominam o atual período da história de pós-modernidade, lendo em seus sinais o fim da era dos padrões, modelos e orientações estáveis de vida. Outros entendem que estamos passando por um período de radicalização da modernidade, denominado de modernidade tardia. Da mesma forma que os pós-modernistas, estes analistas entendem que vivemos em um período de crescentes níveis de incerteza e ansiedade para os indivíduos. Contudo, estes ainda seriam capazes de encontrar formas estáveis e coerentes de viver e se organizar. O presente estudo pretende investigar o processo de construção da identidade social em profissionais de uma empresa de e-business, levando em conta as duas possibilidades alternativas dessa construção: o projeto reflexivo que corresponde à modernidade tardia e, de outro lado, o Ersatz Being, processo relativo às configurações subjetivas da pós-modernidade. Como um processo socialmente construído, a identidade social é um fenômeno muito sensível às alterações no contexto social e cultural. Períodos de turbulência e mudança como o que vivemos atualmente tendem a gerar crises de identidade e junto com elas levantar um conjunto variado de problemas tanto para os indivíduos como para a sociedade e as organiza.

Um panorama histórico que permite uma visão muito mais profunda da complexidade que marca a gênese da identidade moderna, superando as reduções unilaterais que habitualmente caracterizam as sínteses sobre o tema. Depois de mapear as relações entre identidade (senso do self) e noção de bem (visão moral), o autor aborda a gênese desta identidade focalizando três facetas: a interioridade, como despertar da noção do self; a emergência da vida ordinária; a noção de natureza como fonte moral interior. Questions of identity and identification are among the most important evolving concerns of contemporary cultural studies. Through processes of personal identification with discursively constructed subject positions, identities emerge across a wide range of cultural practices in the course of social interactions involving the use of language and other semiotic systems manifested in cultural artefacts of various kinds. The present collection includes a selection of papers on the topic of identity and identification in cultural studies today. Incorporating theoretical contributions and practical case studies, this monograph adds to contemporary debates on identity-forging practices from various theoretical positions in different social, historic and national contexts. Dissident Authorship in Mozambique: the Case of António Quadros is the first monograph on the literary works of the pennames of Portuguese poet and painter António Quadros (1933-1994). The book uses Quadros's quirky case-- a Portuguese man who lived in colonial and post-independence Mozambique, where he published poetry and prose under three pennames--João Pedro Grabato Dias, Frey Ioannes Garabatus, and Mutimati Barnabé Joãoto--to examine the question of what it means to be an author in Mozambique and how authorship changed after the end of Portuguese colonial rule. Quadros's engagement with the question of the authors' place and function in authoritarian contexts stands as a fruitful counterpoint to the influential essays by Roland Barthes ('The Death of the Author', 1968) and Michel Foucault ('What is an Author?', 1969), the publication of which coincided with Quadros's literary début in 1968. Quadros's interesting and useful contributions to the question of Mozambican authorship are analysed in historical context and read alongside postcolonial and decolonial theory. Tom Stennett address the political implications of Barthes's and Foucault's erasure of authorial identity and their respective challenges to authorial authority. He makes the case for an approach to the question of authorship that takes into account the anonymous agents and institutions--such as editors, political parties and the State--that are involved in the conferring of authority onto certain authors and readers. In contrast to much extant scholarship on Mozambican authorship, which has tended to focus on questions related to identity and canonicity, Dissident Authorship addresses these themes as well as those of readership, authority, power, and representation.
