Este livro analisa o período a partir de 1935. São examinadas as dimensões política, econômica e cultural do continente, mediante a progressiva libertação do jugo colonial. Para a África, 1935 marca o início da Segunda Guerra Mundial, com a invasão da Etiópia por Mussolini. O conflito internacional domina a primeira seção deste volume, com a descrição das crises no Chifre da África, na África do Norte e em outras regiões sob o domínio das potências europeias. A segunda e terceira seções do texto ocupam-se das seguidas lutas políticas na África, de 1945 às independências, do subdesenvolvimento e da luta pela autonomia econômica, examinando a construção da nação e a transformação progressiva das estruturas e dos valores políticos.
