Tout au long du XXe siècle, une succession de famines et de disettes, des crises naturelles, épidémiques puis sociopolitiques, suggèrent une fatalité cyclique dont les drames actuels ne seraient que l'aboutissement ultime. L'ampleur des crimes de masse et la virulence des crispations identitaires du temps présent refléteraient-elles un tel piège démographique sous la forme d'une concurrence poussée à l'extrême pour le contrôle de ressources limitées ? L'histoire du Burundi serait-elle l'illustration d'une crise malthusienne, d'une explosion structurelle qui culminerait en une violence paroxystique ? La réalité, telle qu'elle est reconstituée par l'histoire démographique, par une mise en perspective de la croissance et de la transition démographique, est plus complexe. Si les interactions entre la démographie, l'économie, la politique à long terme et les tensions paraissent évidentes, on ne peut en déduire ni un lien mécanique, ni la fatalité d'un blocage. Bien au contraire, c'est dans la modernisation démographique à l'œuvre jusqu'au début de la crise sociopolitique de 1993, dans les dynamiques de ces changements, que se situent les facteurs aggravants de la crise socioculturelle et de la régression ethnique. C'est donc cette mitoyenneté de l'ethnisation et de la transition démographique qu'il convient de mettre en lumière. Dans sa singularité, le cas burundais est aussi révélateur d'un scénario historique commun à d'autres situations... L'auteur a animé durant des années des équipes de recherches universitaires sur le terrain et appuie sa réflexion sur un dépouillement exhaustif des sources d'archives combinées avec des témoignages oraux des populations.

Catholic and Protestant missionaries followed their own, competing agendas rather than those of the colonial state. This volume unravels these agendas and challenges received wisdom on the histories of Rwanda and Burundi, as well as the colonial relationship between state and mission. The archives of the White Fathers Catholic missionary order in Rome and Paris are read alongside primary sources produced by the British Protestant Church Missionary Society to analyse their impact between 1900 and 1972 in Rwanda and Burundi. The colonial state was weaker than often assumed, and permeable by external radical influences. Denominational competition between Catholic and Protestant missionaries was a key motor of this radicalism. The colonial state in both kingdoms was a weak, reactive agent rather than a structuring form of power. This volume shows that missionaries were more committed and influential actors, but their inability to manage the mass demand for the education that they sought and delivered finally undermined the achievement of their aims. Missionaries and the Colonial State is a resource for historians of Christianity, Belgian Africa specialists, and scholars of colonialism.

The core aim of this book is to determine how anthropology and demography can be used in conjunction in the field of population and development. The boundaries of demography are not as clearly defined or as stable as one might think, especially in view of the tension between a formal demography centered on the ‘core of procedures and references’ and a more open form of demography, generally referred to as Population Studies. Many rapprochements, missed opportunities and isolated attempts marked the disciplinary history of anthropology and demography, both disciplines being founded on distinct and highly differentiated traditions and practices. Moreover, the role and the place assigned to epistemology differ significantly in ethnology and demography. Yet, anthropology and demography provide complementary models and research instruments and this book shows that neither discipline can afford to overlook their respective contributions. Based on research conducted in West Africa over more than twenty years, it is a defense of field demography that makes case for a continuum ranging from the initial conception of fieldwork and research to its effective implementation and to data analysis. Changes in behaviors relating to fertility, poverty or migration cannot be interpreted without invoking the cultural factor at some stage. Representations in their collective and individual dimensions also fit into the extended explanatory space of demography.

Les hautes terres kenyanes ont connu à la fin du XX` siècle une densification de la population sans précédent dans le monde. Dans la région très fertile de Kisii, les densités humaines sont passées de 260 hab/km2 en 1962 à 711 hab/km2 en 1999 ! Cet ouvrage montre de quelle manière une société s'adapte à la raréfaction des ressources dans un contexte historique mouvementé. Le Kenya a en effet traversé dans les années 1990 et encore au début de 2008, plusieurs vagues de conflits, décrits comme ethniques dans les médias, qui ont pesé lourdement sur la vie quotidienne et touché de larges secteurs de la société. Ce livre montre les changements progressifs liés à l'évolution du contexte économique, régional et national. Il montre aussi les effets des conflits plus radicaux et des violences sociales. Mais la relation mécanique souvent présentée entre la densité du peuplement et la violence est démystifiée, grâce à une compréhension globale et précise des enjeux économiques et politiques au niveau local. La situation est notamment éclairée par une enquête biographique, conduite au sud-ouest du Kenya, à la limite sud du district de Gucha. La pression démographique conduit en fait la population vers deux issues différentes : des mouvements migratoires complexes et le développement local. On voit donc ici comment l'économie peut être perturbée par des conflits intercommunautaires, mais aussi comment la densification humaine peut être le moteur de pratiques économiques renouvelées, particulièrement clans le secteur dit informel, s'ajoutant aux dynamiques agricoles mieux connues par ailleurs.

This book offers a novel sociological examination of the historical trajectories of Burundi and Rwanda. It challenges both the Eurocentric assumptions which have underpinned many sociological theorisations of modernity, and the notion that the processes of modernisation move gradually, if precariously, towards more peaceable forms of cohabitation within and between societies. Addressing these themes at critical historical junctures – precolonial, colonial and postcolonial – the book argues that the recent experiences of extremely violent social conflict in Burundi and Rwanda cannot be seen as an ‘object apart’ from the concerns of sociologists, as it is commonly presented. This interdisciplinary volume presents a nuanced critique of the prison experience in diverse detention facilities across Africa. The book stresses the contingent, porous nature of African prisons, across both time and space. It draws on original long-term ethnographic research undertaken in both Francophone and Anglophone settings, which are grouped in four parts. The first part examines how the prison has imprinted itself on wider political and social imaginaries and, in turn, how structures of imprisonment carry the imprint of political action of various times. The second part stresses how particular forms of ordering emerge in African prisons. It is held that while these often involve coercion and neglect, they are better understood as the product of on-going negotiations and the search for meaning and value on the part of a multitude of actors. The third part is concerned with how prison life percolates beyond its physical perimeters into its urban and rural surroundings, and vice versa. It deals with the popular and contested nature of what prisons are about and what they do, especially in regard to bringing about moral subjects. The fourth and final part of the book examines how efforts of reforming and resisting the prison take shape at the intersection of globally circulating models of good governance and levels of self-organisation by prisoners.
