Je pouvais hesiter, pour l'etude de la langue de la critique litteraire c'est-a-dire, plus precisement, pour l'etude de la langue des Lundis de sainte-beuve entre la periode romantique et la periode realiste. En fait, la critique de sainte-beuve se presente sous des formes diverses. Sainte-beuve a enseigne et a publie des cours (son Histoire de port-royal a ete professee a Lausanne; son Chateaubriand, a Liege) la langue des cours, meme si elle est plus ecrite que parlee, est fort differente de la langue de l'essai; quant au feuilleton, qui parait a des dates determinees dans un journal, il exige un style particulier, le lecteur des quotidiens exigeant ce que Corneille, jadis, appelait des picoteries. Apres reflexion, je pense grouper, dans un volume suivant, l'etude de la langue et du style des critiques, universitaires et non universitaires.
