Marcel GONINET est né à La Prugne, aux confins du Roannais et du Bourbonnais. Il passe son enfance alternativement entre la banlieue stéphanoise et les monts de la Madeleine. Ancien instituteur, il fait une brillante carrière dans l'enseignement ; il prépare le concours d'admission à l'École Normale Supérieure de Saint-Cloud, puis le Certificat d'Aptitude au Professorat des Écoles Normales dans la section Histoire et Géographie. Il est nommé successivement Professeur, Principal de Collège, entre autres à Charlieu, puis Proviseur, notamment au lycée Jean-Puy à Roanne et au lycée Claude-Fauriel à Saint-Etienne. Il a donc passé une bonne partie de sa vie dans ce pays où il est né et qu'il connaît bien. Au cours de sa carrière d'enseignant, il s'est rendu compte qu'il convenait de combler une lacune : il manquait un ouvrage d'ensemble, sérieux mais accessible à tous, sur le Roannais. C'est ce qui l'a amené à entreprendre et à mener à bien, après de longues années de recherches et de travail acharné, cette « HISTOIRE DE ROANNE ET DE SA RÉGION ». Les connaissances acquises et méditées lui ont permis de présenter une mise au point solide et une évocation vivante de notre histoire qui, nous en sommes persuadés, sera appréciée de nos compatriotes et fera date dans l'édition régionale.
