La présente édition est tirée de l'édition originale épuisée (1966) illustrée par les photographies de Hou Bo (Photographe officielle de Mao) avec la faute sur la page calligraphiée par Lin Biao (ou Piao). Pour un confort de lecture, le format du livre est agrandi.Les citations de Mao sont classées en trente-trois chapitres. Les thèmes sont abordés sous un angle idéologique ouvertement communiste en y ajoutant quelques considérations philosophiques. L'essentiel du livre consiste en des recommandations sur la façon de s'organiser, de se comporter et de penser. Le premier tirage, dont environ 50 à 60 000 exemplaires furent imprimés, n'était pas destiné à la vente mais devait servir de guide aux membres de l'Armée populaire de libération. En 1967 le livre avait déjà été traduit dans plus de 36 langues et plus de 720 millions d'exemplaires avaient déjà été imprimés.
