La toile numérique devient aujourd'hui un nouvel espace de sociabilité. De plus en plus enracinée dans les pratiques et les mentalités, la communication virtuelle instaurée par l'ère de l'Internet est génératrice de nouvelles configurations identitaires à l'oeuvre, tant dans le cyber espace que dans le monde réel. Qu'il s'agisse de blogs personnels ou collectifs, de sites communautaires, de pages Facebook ou encore de jeux sociaux, le cyber espace est producteur d'une nouvelle logique du vivre-ensemhle. En dépit de la fracture numérique tant débattue (entre le nord et le sud de la Méditerranée, entre le milieu urbain et le milieu rural, entre les sexes), il n'est plus à démontrer que cet espace alternatif, à la fois privé et public, s'impose à la recherche comme le lieu problématique où se déploient les ressources d'innombrables activités sociales aussi diverses que le travail, les loisirs, le militantisme, la formation, le commerce, la publicité. Cet ouvrage s'interroge sur les différentes formes de liens sociaux tissés sur le Web. "This book is a history of the field of sociology as it existed from the interwar, wartime, and postwar periods in France and its Empire. This does not refer just to sociologists who did some work in the colonies, or occasionally thought about them in their metropolitan work, but a specific field which was constituted to understand and then govern these colonies. The author argues that the re-founding of French sociology during and after World War II - which spawned the likes of Raymond Aron, Jacques Berque, Georges Balandier, and Pierre Bourdieu - occurred within the context of the re-founding of the French empire. Though there was been much discussion of "decolonizing" sociology in the postwar period, the deep history of sociology's connection to French colonialism and empire has been ignored when, the author argues, it is central. The main driver of the expansion of sociology in this period was colonial developmentalism. Sociologists became favored partners of colonial governments, applying their expertise to an array of "social problems," such as de-tribalization, poverty, labor migration, rapid urbanization and the growth of shantytowns, and the decay of traditional families and religious beliefs, and working on "modernizing" solutions. Many sociologists whose careers began in the overseas colonies formulated concepts and theories that quickly entered metropolitan (and then global) sociology, and their origins were forgotten. Steinmetz examines the ways in colonial sociologists differed from the rest of the discipline -in many ways they represented its most dynamic cutting edge-and how their locations may have affected their intellectual agendas and scholarship. He explores the ways in which these sociologists networked and tracks their major intellectual innovations and influence as a group. He also explores the marginalization faced by both sociologists working in the colonies and those born there, while showing the ways in which they were able to overcome them. The specific challenges of colonial sociology-including some very strongly anticolonial colonial sociologists-shaped sociological theory in ways that are still dominant. The book amounts to a historical sociology of French academia all told-with an emphasis on sociology and other human sciences-as well as a collective biography of many of the major figures, many who are continually read and cited to this day"--

Voilà plusieurs décennies que les concepts de mondialisation et de globalisation sont discutés. Tous les territoires sont peu à peu connectés dans un grand tout charpenté par des réseaux le long desquels les informations, les capitaux, les hommes et les marchandises circulent plus aisément qu’autrefois. Pour autant, l’idée de globalisation ne doit pas faire illusion. L’espace mondial n’est pas encore devenu transparent et isotropique. Des processus contradictoires continuent de caractériser les liens entre les territoires et les sociétés. La proximité géographique demeure d’ailleurs un déterminant majeur des échanges. C’est dans ce contexte que s’imposent dans le monde de grands ensembles territoriaux multi-étatiques. Ils sont le signe visible de ce qui est qualifié tantôt de régionalisation, tantôt d’intégration régionale, formant une échelle territoriale qui a aujourd’hui toute sa place entre le local-national et le mondial. C’est ce que montrent les auteurs de cet ouvrage collectif. Spécialistes de plusieurs disciplines (géographie, science politique, sociologie), leur objectif est de décrire et d’expliquer à plusieurs échelles la régionalisation de l’espace mondial, en utilisant des approches tant théoriques et conceptuelles qu’empiriques. This book provides an overview of the current state of universities in the Arab world, and how they have the potential to transform society to raise the quality of life and stimulate wealth. The main themes progress from general to the specific. Each chapter providing an overview followed by factual analysis and options for the way forward. All of the major challenges facing universities in general are addressed with reference to issues of particular importance in the Arab Region. The challenges faced include: the need to accommodate a social model of life-long learning; the desire for institutional autonomy while interacting with governments; the availability of open-access online courses and distance learning. Arab universities are diverse, ranging from those entirely state-controlled and funded, to wholly independent private universities. The quality of governmental oversight is also variable, and some institutions are clearly unworthy of the appellation ‘university’. The book comprises of 20 chapters authored by senior academics with a wide international experience and a commitment to assisting the improvement of Arab higher educational and research communities.
