La Nouvelle-Calédonie est un territoire littéraire invisible malgré son appartenance au vaste océan de la francophonie. Discrétion ou marginalisation ? La littérature calédonienne existe pourtant. Elle est le produit d’une histoire singulière : celle d’une terre mélanésienne qui deviendra colonie pénitentiaire, Territoire d’outre-mer, collectivité « sui generis »... Cette histoire littéraire de la Nouvelle-Calédonie permet de comprendre comment l’écriture en français, « transportée » par la colonisation dès 1853, fait souche et se développe jusqu’à révéler un champ littéraire propre. Elle tente de saisir comment cette externalisation de la production de la littérature métropolitaine s’enracine dans le terreau calédonien pour relayer l’apparition et l’exacerbation des consciences identitaires calédonienne et kanak, puis leur dépassement dans l’engagement de bon nombre d’auteurs dans le processus de « destin commun ». Outre la mise en perspective de l’histoire avec le développement du champ littéraire, l’originalité de ce travail tient dans le fait qu’il met en lumière un corpus de textes peu connus, mal diffusés, révélant la grande richesse du patrimoine littéraire calédonien. Virginie Soula est née à Nouméa (Nouvelle-Calédonie) en 1979. Docteur en Lettres Modernes, spécialiste de la littérature francophone de Nouvelle-Calédonie et titulaire d’un DESS de relations interculturelles, elle s’intéresse depuis une dizaine d’années à la question de la représentation culturelle de l’archipel et ouvre désormais son champ de réflexion à l’ensemble des littératures océaniennes.

Cette thèse a pour objet d’établir une histoire littéraire de la Nouvelle-Calédonie envisagée selon le paradigme de l’ancrage. Il s’agit de voir comment l’écriture francophone, importée par la colonisation française dès 1853, fait souche et se développe jusqu’à révéler un champ littéraire propre mais qui, toutefois, demeure profondément dominé par les questions politique et identitaire. Cette étude diachronique montre d’abord que l’écriture « transportée » par les Européens s’impose à tous comme une nécessité. Elle répond au besoin de communiquer en situation d’exil ou d’expatriation mais aussi de témoigner de l’expérience à la fois fascinante et anxiogène de la découverte de l’Autre et du nouveau monde. La littérature, externalisation de la production métropolitaine s’enracine progressivement, relayant l’apparition des consciences identitaires calédoniennes et kanak au cours de la première moitié du XXe siècle. La seconde moitié de l’étude montre qu’à cette période de définition et d’affirmations des identités succèdent celle de leurs exacerbations. La crise politique modifie considérablement le champ littéraire qui devient, dès lors plus autonome. Rompant avec la littérature de l’époque coloniale, elle révèle, dans les années 1970 et 1980, de nouveaux auteurs comme de nouveaux genres, faisant émerger, entre autres, un discours d’abord culturaliste puis plus radicalement indépendantiste ou encore un discours minoritaire, revendiquant tous une légitimité. Avec la perspective interculturelle du « destin commun », la littérature continue d’être ancrée dans le contexte social et politique calédonien mais s’engage néanmoins dans ce nouveau processus et fonde une communauté littéraire. Un second volume présente la bibliographie, une liste des principales abréviations utilisées, les index ainsi que des documents annexes dont une chronologie rappelant les principaux événements de l’histoire calédonienne.

Nights of Storytelling is the first book to present and contextualize the founding texts of New Caledonia, a country sui generis in the relatively little-known French Pacific. Extracts from literary, ethnographic, and historical works in English translation introduce the many voices of a diverse culture as it moves toward “independence” or the “common destiny” framed by the 1998 Noumea Agreements. These texts reflect the coexistence of two major cultures, indigenous and European, shaped by the energies and shadows of empire and significantly influenced by one another. From the founding stories of Kanak oral tradition to the contradictory reports by Cook and d’Entrecasteaux, from the accounts of the French colony’s difficult first destiny as a penal settlement to the construction of settler mythologies, the book investigates the nature of overlapping spaces created by cultural contact between Europe and the Pacific. The final section focuses on the literary effervescence of the contemporary period and its revisiting of colonial histories in the difficult movement toward a national identity. Historical romances describe the harshness of life for freed convicts, the impossibility of love between a liberated prisoner and a free settler. Sagas of late-nineteenth-century indentured laborers seeking a living on the nickel-rich main island speak similarly of physical struggle, sacrifice, and ultimately, of contribution to the country’s development and the right to a place in the new land. Kanak texts disseminate that community’s oral culture and largely silenced voice through the printed word. In a world still moving from colonial to postcolonial frames, the engagement of these works with vital contemporary questions of historical legacy, legitimacy, and cultural hybridity is intensely political. Aesthetics is a political ethics as the different communities of New Caledonia experiment with artistic and textual forms to write their distinctive place in the land. Nights of Storytelling is a collaborative work complemented by La nuit des contes, a subtitled DVD of images and text, which features key works read or spoken, generally in the original French. It provides visual and aural access for the book’s Anglophone readers to the specific cultural, linguistic, and geographic contexts of these historical and literary works.

How is colonial history taught in schools? And how do education systems impact power relations between Indigenous people and settlers? This book provides a unique contribution to international discussions about knowledge production and the teaching of colonial history in schools with a comparative analysis of two neighboring settler-colonial societies of the South Pacific. Angélique Stastny argues that school systems in Australia and Kanaky/New Caledonia continue to enact British/Australian and French colonialism, respectively, by leveraging historical narratives that fail to comprehend and willfully ignore the mechanisms and contemporaneity of settler colonialism. Settler regimes of ignorance are sustaining the political status quo of settler-colonial power. Stastny’s work examines this weaponization of ignorance in systems so often focused on the production of knowledge to deepen our understanding of how and why settler-colonial agendas operate in public primary and secondary schools. Ignored Histories takes the reader through the evolution of policy directives for history curricula, historiography and the narratives produced and disseminated in textbooks, and the author’s own ethnography on teachers’ actual practices and experiences. As the story unfolds, it traces the recounts of colonial wars and massacres in textbooks; presents modern accounts of the continuing marginalization—and outright exclusion—of Indigenous historians, practitioners, and knowledge from both curriculum development and pedagogy; problematizes students’ disengagement from learning about their own histories; and brings to light lingering effects of white supremacy and ways to counter them. Some history teachers, on an individual level, engage in insurgent educational strategies in an attempt to shift power relations between Indigenous people and settlers. From the interviews Stastny conducted, we learn that some of these teachers were fired; others successfully developed methods to destabilize and rethink institutional practices and effect change in the classroom. Ultimately, Stastny argues for a system-wide transformation that decolonizes history curricula and the teaching of history by prioritizing Indigenous resurgence, understandings, and knowledge; acknowledging and addressing the difficult truths of the past; and ethically shaping the stories of today.

Comment peut-on se décoloniser ? L’action politique peut-elle contribuer à une émancipation ? Peu après 1946, après plus d’un siècle de répression, de spoliations foncières et de cantonnement dans des réserves, les populations colonisées de Nouvelle-Calédonie accèdent au suffrage universel. L’expérience est unique dans l’Empire colonial français. Elle l’est aussi si on la compare à d’autres sociétés coloniales. Des élus « indigènes » apparaissent et accèdent à ce statut nouveau de représentants. Jusque dans les années soixante-dix, cette première génération de dirigeants invente « la » politique dans le monde « indigène ». Ils pénètrent dans des assemblées représentatives, organisent des réunions publiques, défendent des intérêts, font campagne. Pourtant, ils ne se révoltent pas. Ils ne parlent pas des injustices dont ils ont été les victimes et se disent Indigènes et Français. Pendant trente ans, alors que la plupart des colonies françaises deviennent indépendantes, ils proclament au contraire leur attachement à la France. C’est à croire que le cadre démocratique a fini par produire un consentement. En réalité, se jouent les conditions d’une révolte impossible. Lorsque l’on se situe au plus près de leur trajectoire et de leurs expériences, on saisit mieux les logiques de leur positionnement, de même que les tensions sociales et personnelles qui traversent leur histoire mouvementée. En s’engageant dans ce monde colonial, ces élus portent et supportent tout ce qu’il a de contradictoire. Ils franchissent des frontières sociales et coloniales jusqu’alors interdites. Ils usent de toutes les formes de légitimité politique, religieuse, coutumière. Avec eux, des certitudes vacillent : c’est la fin des « Indigènes » et l’avènement d’un autre possible.
