Resumir en un número no demasiado extenso de páginas tan prolongado devenir a lo largo de siglos no ha sido tarea fácil. Sin embargo, tal fue uno de los objetivos perseguidos en la elaboración de esta obra, originalmente presentada en cuatro volúmenes y que ahora aparece, en nueva reedición, en uno solo. Para llevarlo a cabo fue precisa la colaboración de varios especialistas de la Universidad de Cádiz en cada uno de los periodos de que se compone (Antigüedad, Edad Media, Edad Moderna y Edad Contemporánea). Son ellos, precisamente, quienes, con pluma amena y solvente, van llevando al lector de la mano por los intríngulis de una historia compleja a la par que sugerente, cuyo término no es otro que el Cádiz de finales del siglo pasado. Demografía, sociedad, economía, política, cultura y religión componen para cada uno de las épocas un vasto y trabado mosaico, donde el lector interesado puede encontrar las diferentes facetas de la vida de la ciudad a lo largo del periodo de tiempo en cuestión. Por otro lado, en la obra se han vertido conocimientos que, en el momento de su primera publicación, eran poco comunes en otros trabajos relativos a la ciudad del mismo tenor e, incluso, inéditos. Ello, unido a otros factores, ha hecho del libro que ahora presentamos de nuevo un clásico, de obligada consulta para todos aquellos que se interesen por la historia de la milenaria ciudad.
