Otras lenguas de cultura se han hablado y escrito durante siglos: el sumerio, el egipcio, el hebreo, el árabe, etc., pero no puede dudarse que, por el influjo que ha ejercido en todas las demás, el griego es la primera lengua del mundo. El griego no sólo sigue vivo hoy en grecia, sino que tiene una segunda vida: su alfabeto, su léxico, su sintaxis, sus géneros literarios están presentes en todas las lenguas. Esta historia de la lengua griega desde sus orígenes hasta la actualidad está estructurada en dos partes. En la primera se estudia el período que va desde el indoeuropeo al griego común y al ático. En la segunda se explica la historia de la koiné, o lengua común derivada del ático, y la de sus variantes, desde la época helenística, a través de las épocas romana y bizantina hasta hoy mismo. Se dedica una especial atención a la creación y difusión del griego científico, que ha infiltrado todas las lenguas, bien directamente, bien a través de otras interpuestas.
