El relato empieza en los años del tercer peronismo, marcados por la conflictividad social, el aumento de la violencia política y represiva, y el creciente rol político de los militares. Capítulo a capítulo, la autora caracteriza las diferentes etapas del régimen, ya que la alternancia de presidentes y la cambiante integración de las Juntas fueron expresión de las facciones y las discrepancias que dividieron al gobierno a lo largo de esos años. Cada fase exhibió rasgos particulares en cuanto a los proyectos económicos, los vínculos con sectores sindicales, el ejercicio de la represión, las estrategias dirigidas a interpelar a la población. Al desplegar esa complejidad, la autora revela cómo, con excepción del plan represivo que se ejecutó a sangre y fuego, en muchos otros terrenos se implementaron políticas fragmentarias, limitadas o erráticas. Además, lejos de generalizar a partir de la realidad capitalina o bonaerense, pone el foco en lo que sucedía en otras provincias y localidades, visibilizando matices y zonas poco exploradas hasta ahora. Con claridad y precisión narrativa, atenta a los sectores de poder y también a lo que sucedía en la base de la sociedad, Gabriela Águila reconstruye la historia de la dictadura más feroz que tuvo la Argentina y, sin relativizar lo que significó como experiencia histórica, logra mostrar sus alcances, sus límites y sus fracasos.

Esta tesis analiza las representaciones sobre la última dictadura militar (1976-1983) presentes en los textos escolares de Historia del nivel Secundario de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires publicados entre 1976 y 2009. En la primera parte se da cuenta de las relaciones entre memoria, historia y educación para luego presentar la perspectiva teórica de la cual se parte y cómo a partir de ella se ha enfrentado el análisis de los textos escolares desde una mirada tributaria de los estudios sobre la memoria colectiva. En la segunda parte, se presentan los resultados de la investigación a partir del análisis de las representaciones sobre la dictadura presentes en los textos escolares tanto a lo largo del tiempo como dentro de cada uno de los periodos definidos. El corpus empírico de esta investigación está conformado por alrededor de 50 textos escolares correspondientes a diferentes autores, editoriales y años. La investigación señala que fueron los militares quienes durante la dictadura tomaron la decisión de otorgar mayor trascendencia al tratamiento del presente en el plan de estudios de Historia, dentro de su estrategia de autolegitimación. Así, las últimas páginas de los textos escolares publicados esos años presentarán la visión oficial sobre los años de violencia política, justificando el accionar militar. El retorno de la democracia no supuso, con alguna excepción hacia el final de la década del ochenta, un cambio en las representaciones de los textos escolares sobre aquellos años, producto del bajo dinamismo en el mercado editorial y la falta de actualización curricular. Es a partir de la segunda mitad de los años noventa, como resultado de la Ley Federal de Educación de 1993 y en un contexto de reinstalación social de las denuncias a las violaciones de los derechos humanos, cuando se desarrolla un viraje radical en la representación del pasado dictatorial presente en los textos escolares, con la explosión del mercado editorial y la llegada de autores provenientes del ámbito universitario y profesional. A partir de allí, con un lenguaje muy distinto al de antaño, coexistirán en los textos diferentes posturas sobre la dictadura militar, incluyendo desde aquellas que continuaban sosteniendo la necesaria intervención militar aún con críticas a la forma en que fue llevada la represión, a otras que insistirán en su absoluta ilegitimidad y harán hincapié en la negativa herencia sobre la nueva democracia. Esta última postura fue ganando terreno y resultaba cercana a la memoria social sostenida principalmente por los organismos de derechos humanos que se afianzaba como hegemónica en el espacio público, pero se alejaba de la postura oficial que abogaba por el olvido y el perdón en pos de la reconciliación nacional. Así, en los últimos años se consolidan en los textos escolares visiones claramente críticas del pasado dictatorial, aún cuando no son menores las diferencias halladas entre los distintos textos. A partir de 2003, la asunción por parte de las autoridades nacionales de la postura sostenida por los organismos de derechos humanos implicará un alto grado de afinidad entre la memoria oficial, la memoria social hegemónica y las representaciones presentes en los textos escolares sobre la última dictadura militar.

States of Memory illuminates the construction of national memory from a comparative perspective.
