Uno de los caracteres que más poderosamente llaman la atención en la heterodoxia española de todos los tiempos es su falta de originalidad; y esta pobreza de espíritu propio sube de punto en nuestros contemporáneos y en sus inmediatos predecesores. Si alguna novedad, aunque relativa y sólo por lo que hace a la forma del sistema, lograron Servet y Miguel de Molinos, lo que es de nuestros disidentes del pasado y presente siglo, bien puede afirmarse, sin pecar de injusticia o preocupación, que se han reducido al modestísimo papel de traductores y expositores, en general malos y atrasados, de lo que fuera de aquí estaba en boga. Siendo, pues, la heterodoxia española ruin y tristísima secuela de doctrinas e impulsos extraños, necesario es dar idea de los orígenes de la impiedad moderna, de la misma suerte que expusimos los antecedentes de la Reforma antes de hablar de los protestantes españoles del siglo XVI. La negación de la divinidad de Cristo es la grande y la capital herejía de los tiempos modernos; aplicación lógica del libro examen, proclamado por algunos de los corifeos de la Reforma, aunque ninguno de ellos calculó su alcance ni sus consecuencias ni se arrojó a negar la autoridad de la revelación. Las herejías parciales, aisladas, sobre tal o cual punto del dogma, las sutilezas dialécticas, las controversias de escuela, no son fruto de nuestra era. El que en los primeros siglos cristianos se apartaba de la doctrina de la Iglesia en la materia de Trinidad, o en la de encarnación, o en la de justificación, no por eso contradecía en los demás puntos el sentir ortodoxo, ni mucho menos negaba el carácter divino de la misma Iglesia y de su Fundador. Por el contrario, la herejía moderna es radical y absoluta; herejía sólo en cuanto nace de la cristiandad; apostasía en cuanto sus sectarios reniegan de todos los dogmas cristianos, cuando no de los principios de la religión natural y de las verdades que por sí puede alcanzar el humano entendimiento.
