Sr. D. Diego Aduarte hasta el capítulo LV de su segundo libro, y proseguida hasta el fm por el venerable P. Fr. Domingo Gonzalez, con la segunda, que compuso el P. Fr. Baltasar de Santa Cruz, habian sido impresas en Zaragoza el año de 1693, y de ellas apenas habia cuatro ejemplares en las islas Filipinas. Poco ménos sucedía con la tercera y cuarta, escrita aquélla por el P. Fr. Vicente Salazar, y ésta por el Ilmo. Sr. D. Fr. Domingo Collantes, excepcion de los sucesos referidos en los diez y ocho primeros años, que, como dice el mismo autor, lo fueron por el P. Fr. Luis Sierra. La reimpresion de estas cuatro partes, ademas de que seria muy costosa, su lectura en el dia ofrecería muy poco interes, ora por la diversidad de su estilo, ora por su demasiada difusion. Esto me ha movido a presentar la Hz'rtaría de la Provincia en toda su integridad, compen diando las noticias que nos trasmitieron los autores referidos desde el princi pio hasta el indicado año de 1765, en que la dejó el Ilmo. Collantes, y en seguida proseguirla bajo un mismo método hasta los tiempos más recientes. Esta idea ya trataba de realizarla el citado autor de la cuarta parte, lo que no hizo, tal vez, por haber sido promovido poco despues a la silla de Nueva Cá ceres. Sin embargo de lo dicho, para escribir la historia de lo acontecido en el dilatado espacio de ciento ochenta años, de que hablan las cuatro partes re feridas, no me he limitado a las noticias que en ellas se reñeren; para mayor exactitud hc procurado consultar cuantos documentos existen todavia en los archivos del convento y colegios de Manila, y los escritos que se han publi cado hasta nuestros dias relativos a los sucesos de las islas Filipinas y sus mi siones. Aun he llevado mis trabajos más allá de lo que pedia la historia par ticular de una provincia religiosa; la primera parte da principio con la fundacion de la Provincia del stírimo Romrz'o, y con ella sola el lector casi nada puede saber de lo que pasó en las expresadas islas hasta entónces. Para llenar este vacio, he creido oportuno dar en compendio una noticia de la topogra fia y estado del país, así como tambien de la historia de los sucesos más no tables que acontecieron en las mismas desde la expedicion de Magallanes hasta la llegada de nuestros fundadores a Manila. Y a En de que la lectura fuese más amena y variada, he procurado interpolar los sucesos más notables que se han verificado aún en lo político, los que no han sido enteramente ajenos de la Provincia; porque en casi todos ellos han tenido alguna parte, ora activa, ora pasiva, algunos religiosos de la misma. El que tratara en el dia de dar a luz una historia general de Filipinas, con dificultad podria presentar suceso alguno memorable, que no se halle en los once libros y puntos preli minares de la presente.
