La Historia de la rebelión y castigo de los moriscos del Reino de Granada (1600), contiene, entre otros documentos clave sobre dicha rebelión, las Capitulaciones de los moriscos, o el Memorial en defensa de las costumbres moriscas que originó la disputa. Luis del Mármol, su autor, combatió en el norte de África. Allí conoció de cerca las vicisitudes y conflictos de las relaciones entre el mundo islámico y España. Del Mármol comenzó a redactar su manuscrito a partir de 1574, pero no es hasta el año 1600, que la imprenta malagueña de Juan René se encargara de publicarlo. Historia de la rebelión y castigo de los moriscos relata desde el testimonio ocular del cronista, todos los acontecimientos sucedidos en el reino de Granada durante los años de la rebelión de los moriscos, descendientes de los moros cristianizados (1560-1571), en La Alpujarra, cuyos líderes fueron Aben Humeya y Diego López, llamado Abdalá Abén Aboo. La rebelión no sería sofocada hasta 1571. Luis de Mármol Carvajal, siendo muy joven, participó en la campaña africana del emperador Carlos V en 1535. Sufrió cautiverio en presidios musulmanes unos siete años y ocho meses. Así lo afirma en su prólogo a la primera parte de la Descripción general de África. Luego, tras recuperar su libertad, llegó a recorrer territorios del Imperio otomano. Su presencia en tierras africanas se extendió unos quince años. Tanto tiempo le permitió conocer muy bien la cultura y la lengua árabe. En 1568 comienza la guerra contra los moriscos (1568-1571). En este período bélico, y en Granada, Luis del Mármol Carvajal sirvió a Juan de Austria en las tareas de expulsión de los moriscos. Por designación del mismo hermano del emperador español, ejerció el cargo de proveedor de bastimentos y municiones del ejército. Luis del Mármol Carvajal fue un testigo de excepción por su condición de veedor del ejército real. Esta Historia de la rebelión y castigo de los moriscos, es la crónica más amplia y minuciosa de aquella guerra. Todavía hoy constituye una fuente de gran valor para los historiadores.
