Lo que hicieron los godos, primeros invasores y como vanguardia de los pueblos bárbaros, fué ir debilitando en lo material un imperio que la I corrupción interior iba también moralmente corroyendo, al propio tiempo que ellos se dejaban ganar insensiblemente á la civilización, hasta el punto que había de convenir para la misión que estaban llamados á desempeñar. Mas cuando el imperio dejó de estar sostenido por manos vigorosas y ro bustas, cuando la molicie y relajación le tenían enervado, entonces, áfmes del IV y principios del v siglo de la era cristiana, de todas las regiones del Norte casi simultáneamente, y como movidos por un misterioso impulso y por un agente secreto, cayeron sobre el antiguo mundo romano con im petuosidad irresistible aquellos enjambres numerosos de alanos, de suevos, de marcomanos, de hérulos, de humos, de godos, de gépidos, de borgoño nes, de vándalos, de alemanes, y de otra multitud de razas indo-escitas y germanas; que fué uno de los más grandes acaecimientos, acaso el mayor y más portentoso que se cuenta en los anales de la humanidad. De aque llos pueblos, mientras los godos al mando de Alarico saqueaban la capital del antiguo mundo, venían á España, después de haber devastado las Ga lias, los suevos, los vándalos y los alanos. Los alanos, pueblo de raza escítica, habían habitado al principio entre el Ponto Euxino y el mar Caspio. Luego extendieron sus conquistas desde el Volga hasta el Tanais, y penetraron por un lado hasta la Siberia y por otro hasta Persia y la India. Invadido su país por los hunos, procedentes de las fronteras de la China, una parte de ellos se refugió á las montañas del Cáucaso, donde conservó su independencia y su nombre: otra parte avanzó hasta el Báltico, donde se asoció á las tribus septentrionales de Alemania, con los suevos, los vándalos y los borgoñones, contra los godos. Tan agrestes y feroces como amantes de la libertad, la guerra, el pillaje y la destrucción eran sus placeres. Todo el objeto de su culto un sable cla vado en la tierra; su fuerza militar, como la de todos los pueblos bárbaros, consistía en la caballería, y adornaban los caparazones de sus caballos con los cráneos de sus enemigos. Por esta causa desde Burgos donde era ido con intento de llegar dinero para la guerra, a grandes jornadas se partio para Cordova. Llevo consigo a sus hijos don Alonso y don Fer nando, mozos de excelentes naturales, y de edad a proposito para tomarlas armas. El padre como sagaz pretendia que los primeros principios y ensayos de su milicia fuesen en la guerra contra los infieles enemigos delos cristianos. Pretendia otrosi con el uso de las armas desper tar su esfuerzo y hacellos habiles para todo. En el mismo tiempo el rey don Jaime fue Mom peller para ver si podia juntar algun dinero de aquellos ciudadanos para la guerra, de que tenia no menos falta quela que en Castilla se padecia. Deseaba asimismo sosegar los mora dores de aquella ciudad, que andaban divididos en bandos, castigando a los culpados lo uno y lo otro se hizo. El rey moro Alhamar junto alos demas estados que tenia, el senorio de Gra nada con voluntad de aquellos ciudadanos: ciudad poderosa en armas y en varones y que por la fertilidad de sus campos no tiene mengua de cosa alguna. Este fue el principio del reino de Granada que duro desde entonces hasta el tiempo y memoria de nuestros abuelos. En Murcia por odio que tenian a Alhamar, los ciudadanos alzaron por su rey a uno llamado Hudiel ocasion de que se comenzaron las enemistades graves y para aquella gente perjudiciales que largo tiempo se continuaron entre aquellas dos ciudades.
