Para los seres humanos comer, dormir, moverse y hacer cosas semejantes resulta inesencial (cuando no imposible) en estados como el duelo por la pérdida de un ser querido, el temor intenso, la sensación de fracaso y hasta la simple curiosidad. En ello se manifiesta la superioridad del espíritu sobre sus condiciones de existencia; y en poder afectar los ánimos mismos reside lo esencial de algunos fármacos: potenciando momentáneamente la serenidad, la energía y la percepción permiten reducir del mismo modo la aflicción, la apatía y la rutina psíquica. Esto explica que desde el origen de los tiempos se hayan considerado un don divino, de naturaleza fundamentalmente mágica.
