El estudio integral de cualquier disciplina del conocimiento exige bases sólidas y bien cimentadas. Este libro se ha realizado con la intención de auxiliar en el cumplimiento de los objetivos de los nuevos programas de enseñanza de la medicina, en los cuales, los alumnos, partiendo de un contenido teórico general pueden aplicarlo en la interpretación y valoración de los problemas de salud de la sociedad actual; así como, fundamentar e interpretar los cambios operados a través de los siglos en el desarrollo de la medicina, hasta alcanzar su estado actual, todo ello con un criterio científico. Conocer el pasado para comprender el presente y enfrentar el futuro, es parte del valor del estudio de la historia en cualquier disciplina del saber, pero de particular importancia en el campo de la salud. Textos sobre esta materia hay muchos, algunos clásicos que son obras magnas donde se puede profundizar en aspectos muy particulares de la evolución de la ciencia médica. Hay otros que son útiles para orientarse y conocer los aspectos más trascendentales. Nuestra obra está hecha con fundamentos filosóficos y un enfoque ameno pero crítico, sin llegar a ser severo, sencillo sin llegar a ser paternalista o determinístico, para quien desea o requiere saber los aspectos históricos en el desarrollo y evolución de la medicina, para quien se interesa en las obras sin ganas de fastidiarse en los detalles. Filosóficamente, la obra pretende estar centrada en el estudio crítico de la historia de la medicina, sin caer en las tendencias del liberalismo o del positivismo; el primero (el liberalismo), que pretende interpretar la historia como un proceso sujeto a las pasiones y los deseos de unos cuantos grandes hombres, cuyas cualidades personales se exaltan hasta el mito o la leyenda; y el segundo (el positivismo), que nos da una larga colección de datos ordenados lógicamente pero sin el necesario análisis reflexivo sobre sus causas y condicionantes; esta línea filosófica es la que describe la historia como “la sucesión de sucesos sucedidos sucesivamente”, que en la práctica corresponde con los maestros que exigen a los alumnos memorizar hechos, fechas, lugares y nombres sin importancia. Esta obra pretende ser a la vez libro de texto y de consulta.

This handsomely illustrated book offers a panoramic view of ancient Mexico, beginning more than thirty thousand years ago and ending with European occupation in the sixteenth century. Drawing on archaeological and ethnohistorical sources, the book is one of the first to offer a unified vision of Mexico's precolonial past. Typical histories of Mexico focus on the prosperity and accomplishments of Mesoamerica, located in the southern half of Mexico, due to the wealth of records about the glorious past of this region. Mesoamerica was only one of three cultural superareas of ancient Mexico, however, all interlinked by complex economic and social relationships. Tracing the large social transformations that took place from the earliest hunter-gatherer times to the Postclassic states, the authors describe the ties between the three superareas of ancient Mexico, which stretched from present-day Costa Rica to what is now the southwestern United States. According to the authors, these superareas–Mesoamerica, Aridamerica, and Oasisamerica–cannot be viewed as independent entities. Instead, they must be considered as a whole to understand the complex reality of Mexico's past and possible visions of Mexico's future.
