Territorios de la agricultura colombiana analiza la evolución de la producción agrícola comercial del país, en el marco de una exploración teórica sobre los procesos de formación de regiones y territorios. Estudia la implantación de los cultivos comerciales en las distintas regiones del país en el marco de las condiciones sociales de cada una de ellas y dentro de las diferentes políticas públicas dirigidas hacia la agricultura y la tierra, en particular.Las páginas iniciales recorren el marco temporal de referencia comprendido entre la promulgación de la Ley 135 de 1961, primera propuesta de reforma agraria, surgida en el Frente Nacional, y la convergencia de la âapertura económicaâ con la inserción de Colombia en la economía del narcotráfico. Propuesto este período de estudio, el autor plantea sus referentes conceptuales, centrados en la comprensión de los procesos de construcción social del espacio. La secuencia nos conduce a una caracterización del panorama actual de la agricultura colombiana, sus tendencias y las condiciones del reparto agrario, temas que tienen luego desarrollo en la búsqueda de sus relaciones con los distintos alcances de las políticas planteadas por los sucesivos gobiernos.El análisis señala cómo el afianzamiento del sector empresarial, en el marco de las políticas generadas por su acentuada representación en el Estado, genera cambios profundos en las condiciones de acceso a la tierra de las distintas comunidades campesinas. Estos procesos, asociados de manera persistente al ejercicio de la violencia, profundizan los desequilibrios sociales y políticos que afectan a las poblaciones rurales, y el marginamiento al que éstas son sometidas no encuentra compensación en los sucedáneos del reparto agrario. A su vez, los desequilibrios así generados se transformaron en la cuna de un nuevo factor de conflicto representado en la incorporación de Colombia en la economía del narcotráfico. La expansión de la agricultura comercial en los marcos de la apropiación monopólica de la tierra y la exclusión de los campesinos y demás trabajadores agrarios se convierte en motor del destierro masivo de las poblaciones rurales. El destino de los desposeídos es sumarse a una oferta de mano de obra que no encuentra posibilidades en los mercados de trabajo urbano y engrosar el creciente mundo de la pobreza y la indigencia.Este recorrido por el avasallador âmodelo agrarioâ en marcha concluye con un conjunto de propuestas encaminadas a buscarle un rumbo diferente al país, orientado a construir el bienestar de la población colombiana, su seguridad y soberanía alimentarias, la generación de empleos e ingresos, la estabilidad de las comunidades y la protección del patrimonio ambiental en condiciones democráticas y de respeto a los derechos humanos.

Reducing the intake of sodium is an important public health goal for Americans. Since the 1970s, an array of public health interventions and national dietary guidelines has sought to reduce sodium intake. However, the U.S. population still consumes more sodium than is recommended, placing individuals at risk for diseases related to elevated blood pressure. Strategies to Reduce Sodium Intake in the United States evaluates and makes recommendations about strategies that could be implemented to reduce dietary sodium intake to levels recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The book reviews past and ongoing efforts to reduce the sodium content of the food supply and to motivate consumers to change behavior. Based on past lessons learned, the book makes recommendations for future initiatives. Along the undisturbed shores, especially of the Mediterranean Sea and the European North Atlantic Ocean, is a quite widespread plant called Beta maritima by botanists, or more commonly sea beet. Nothing, for the inexperienced observer's eye, distinguishes it from surrounding wild vegetation. Despite its inconspicuous and nearly invisible flowers, the plant has had and will have invaluable economic and scientific importance. Indeed, according to Linnè, it is considered "the progenitor of the beet crops possibly born from Beta maritima in some foreign country". Recent molecular research confirmed this lineage. Selection applied after domestication has created many cultivated types with different destinations. The wild plant always has been harvested and used both for food and as a medicinal herb. Sea beet crosses easily with the cultivated types. This facilitates the transmission of genetic traits lost during domestication, which selection processes aimed only at features immediately useful to farmers and consumers may have depleted. Indeed, as with several crop wild relatives, Beta maritima has been successfully used to improve cultivated beet’s genetic resistances against many diseases and pests. In fact, sugar beet cultivation currently would be impossible in many countries without the recovery of traits preserved in the wild germplasm. Dr. Enrico Biancardi graduated from Bologna University. From 1977 until 2009, he was involved in sugar beet breeding activity by the Istituto Sperimentale per le Colture Industriali (ISCI) formerly Stazione Sperimentale di Bieticoltura (Rovigo, Italy), where he released rhizomania and cercospora resistant germplasm and collected seeds of Mediterranean sea beet populations as a genetic resource for breeding and ex situ conservation. Retired since 2009, he still collaborates with several working breeders, in particular, at the USDA Agricultural Research Stations, at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science (CAAS), and at the Athens University (AUA). He has edited books, books chapters and authored more than 150 papers. Dr. Lee Panella is a plant breeder and geneticist with the USDA-ARS at Fort Collins, Colorado. He earned his B.S. in Crop and Soil Science from Michigan State University, an M.S. in Plant Breeding from Texas A&M University, and a Ph.D. in genetics from the University of California at Davis. His research focus is developing disease resistant germplasm using sugar beet wild relatives. He is chairman of the USDA-ARS Sugar Beet Crop Germplasm Committee and has collected and worked extensively with sea beet. Dr. Robert T. Lewellen was raised on a ranch in Eastern Oregon and obtained a B.S. in Crop Science from Oregon State University followed by a Ph.D. from Montana State University in Genetics. From 1966 to 2008 he was a research geneticist for the USDA-ARS at Salinas, California, where he studied the genetics of sugar beet and as a plant breeder, often used sea beet as a genetic source to produce many pest and disease resistant sugar beet germplasm and parental lines, while authoring more than 100 publications.
