El objetivo de este artículo es analizar las actividades de los libros de texto de Historia de España e Inglaterra para comprobar su nivel cognitivo y la presencia de competencias de pensamiento histórico. Se han analizado 4602 actividades de manuales escolares de ambos países para comparar en qué medida se promueve el pensamiento histórico y habilidades cognitivas complejas en cada país. Para conseguir este objetivo se han analizado tres variables: tipología de actividad, nivel cognitivo de la actividad y la presencia de conceptos históricos de primer y segundo orden. Los resultados muestran que existen diferencias entre España e Inglaterra en relación a la complejidad de las actividades y al desarrollo y evaluación del pensamiento histórico a través de las mismas. Este estudio concluye destacando la necesidad de replantear la enseñanza de la historia a través del trabajo con fuentes primarias y otras destrezas de pensamiento histórico que permitan el desarrollo de competencias históricas y la resolución de actividades con un mayor nivel de complejidad.

Menéndez Pelayo en el pensamiento jurídico contemporáneo es una muy apretada síntesis de la tesis doctoral en Derecho del autor titulada El pensamiento jurídico de Menéndez Pelayo en el contexto de la reflexión histórico-jurídica y iusfilosófica contemporánea, que fue dirigida por el catedrático de Derecho Constitucional José Peña González y que obtuvo la calificación de Sobresaliente cum laude ante un tribunal formado por el catedrático de Derecho Procesal Pablo Gutiérrez de Cabiedes (Presidente), los catedráticos José Manuel Cuenca Toribio de Historia Moderna y Contemporánea de España (Universidad de Córdoba), Juan Baró Pazos de Historia del Derecho (Universidad de Cantabria), el magistrado y doctor en Filosofía Víctor-Rafael Rivas Carreras (Audiencia Provincial de Toledo) y el profesor de Derecho Constitucional Pablo Gallego González (Universidad CEU-San Pablo). El trabajo pretende dar a conocer las principales contribuciones del padre de la historiografía española, Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo, a la idea del Derecho y de la Justicia, expuestas a lo largo de toda su obra y concernientes al Derecho Romano, Historia y Filosofía del Derecho, Derecho Político y Constitucional, Derecho Administrativo, Derecho de Gentes y Derecho Penal para concluir que el historiador de Santander, si bien no fue jurista de profesión, sí fue un muy estimable jurista de formación, cuyas ideas sobre la contextualización histórica del Derecho influyeron en reputados juristas sedicentes discípulos suyos como Eduardo de Hinojosa, Rafael de Ureña, Rafael Altamira, Adolfo Bonilla y San Martín, Eloy Bullón o Gabriel Maura.
