La Transición española tuvo lugar durante la guerra fría y, como se analiza en esta obra, España sufrió un aislamiento durante la dictadura franquista que dejó en aquella sociedad un legado que todavía dificulta la relación de los acontecimientos autóctonos con un mundo en extremo interrelacionado y convulso. Aquel contexto y los intereses internacionales de los diferentes actores políticos más relevantes del orden mundial influyeron de muy diferentes formas en la promoción de la democracia española, condicionaron las actuaciones de los políticos en general y alentaron o hicieron invisibles, en su caso, a no pocos. Sin embargo, a pesar de que ninguna transición de esta magnitud, inscrita en la denominada “tercera ola democratizadora”, sucedió en un completo aislamiento de ideas y circunstancias, los factores externos del proceso siguen sin merecer la atención necesaria por parte de los expertos, aunque se destaque la influencia ejercida por el “modelo español” en transiciones posteriores.
