At least 200,000 people died from hunger or malnutrition-related diseases in Spain during the 1940s. This book provides a political explanation for the famine and brings together a broad range of academics based in Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia to achieve this. Topics include the political causes of the famine, the physical and social consequences, the ways Spaniards tried to survive, the regime's reluctance to accept international relief, the politics of cooking at a time of famine, and the memory of the famine. The volume challenges the silence and misrepresentation that still surround the famine. It reveals the reality of how people perished in Spain because the Francoist authorities instituted a policy of food self-sufficiency (or autarky): a system of price regulation which placed restrictions on transport as well as food sales. The contributors trace the massive decline in food production which followed, the hoarding which took place on an enormous scale and the vast and deeply iniquitous black market that subsequently flourished at a time when salaries plunged to 50% below their levels in 1936: all contributing factors in the large-scale atrocity explored fully here for the first time.

Onomastics in Contemporary Public Space aims at analysing names and name-giving from an intercultural perspective, within the context of contemporary public space. As was the case of Name and Naming: Synchronic and Diachronic Perspectives (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2012), the geographical areas investigated in the studies included in this volume are very diverse, referring not only to European cultural space, but also to American, Asian, African and Australian contexts. Being a collective work, the book brings together 49 specialists from 18 countries; namely Australia, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, the United Kingdom and the USA. Thematically, the volume is organised so that it may cover all the dimensions of public space, as far as onomastics is concerned. The specific areas studied are: the theory of names; names of public places (linguistic landscapes); names of public, economic, cultural, religious and sports institutions (names of business establishments, religious institutions – places of worship – and cultural associations, as well as names in journals and magazines); names of objects/entities resulting from various processes in public space (names of foods, drinks and food brands, code names of collaborators in secret service organisations, names in literature, nicknames/bynames/pseudonyms in the world of politics, high life, art and sport, names in virtual space, and zoonyms); and miscellanea. The originality and topicality of the subject lie in the multidisciplinary viewpoint adopted in the research, in which onomastics merges with adjacent linguistic disciplines, such as sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics and pragmatics, as well as other sciences, such as history, literature, anthropology, politics, economy and religion.

Este libro que ahora presentamos ofrece los resultados de una intensa investigación sobre unas instituciones de dilatada a la vez que poco estudiada trayectoria, las Cámaras de Comercio. Pese a su presencia en la mayoría de los países del mundo, pese a su actividad desplegada en el nuestro desde hace ya más de 100 años, realmente muy pocas veces se ha abordado su labor desde perspectivas que fueran más allá de la mera descripción o la fácil apología. En estos momentos, en los que sus funciones y carácter vuelven a estar -de nuevo sometidos a discusión. Puede ser de interés reflexionar sobre su compleja e interesante historia. A la par que instituciones de carácter oficial, las Cámaras son organismos de representación de los intereses empresariales. La explicación de este doble (y como veremos problemático) carácter sirvió de inicial estímulo para nuestro trabajo, dado que deseábamos dedicar nuestra atención al muy poco cultivado campo de las investigaciones sobre las organizaciones empresariales. Asimismo, despertó nuestro interés su proyección tanto nacional como local. La inserción de las investigaciones locales en ámbitos y problemáticas globales es una propuesta teórica común en las discusiones acerca de la validez de la llamada Historia Local. Quienes participamos de la creencia en las virtudes de esta forma de hacer Historia no vemos mejor camino -más allá de las disquisiciones teóricas que concretar dichos planteamientos en la práctica investigadora concreta. La elección del periodo estudiado ha venido motivada por una doble intención: por un lado, mostrar de una forma más clara que la que se observa en otros periodos la problemática que afecta desde los inicios de su andadura a las Cámaras, derivada de su ambivalente carácter; por otro, reflexionar sobre el coste que supuso dicho periodo para una adecuada reorganización de la actividad camera/ en el periodo democrático. coste que aún hoy deja sentir sus efectos.
