En los últimos años, dentro de la comunidad científica antropológica, tanto venezolana como internacional, se ha desarrollado un debate crítico sobre la po sibilidad y necesidad de investigar las sociedades del pasado desde una perspectiva antropológica y no sólo historiográfica. Los interlocutores han sido, principalmente, los arqueólogos y los antropólogos sociales, dentro de la disciplina y, fuera de ella, los historiadores, quienes intenta defender un espacio ya erosionado por los aportes que, en su campo, han producidos tendencia como la de los Anales franceses y de la microstoria italiana. De hecho, durante el siglo xx, es a partir de estas sensibilidades historiográficas que ha sido posible un acercamiento entre historia y antropología, más allá de las polémicas sobre "acontecimiento y estructura" de los años 60 y del decaimiento de valor de la llamada etnohistoria. En el caso de Venezuela, donde se intenta actualmente definir un campo para la antropología histórica, el antecedente más importante de esta nueva perspectiva de estudio ha sido Miguel Acosta Saignes, con su propuesta de considerar los estudios antropológicos de sociedades indígenas del pasado como "etnología antigua", para distinguirla de la "etnología contemporánea", de la cual mantendría tanto la perspectiva teórica como metodológica. A través de un análisis de los textos de Acosta Saignes, se pretende enlazar su método y propuesta epistemológica con la actual antropología histórica, intentando demostrar: a) la actualidad del pensamiento de Acosta Saignes; b) su aporte para la definición teórica y metodológicamente a la antropología histórica y e) su importancia para la historia de la antropología en Venezuela.
