En 1912, Joseph Conrad reunió en un volumen que tituló Entre tierra y mar tres largos relatos que había publicado con anterioridad y cuyo nexo de unión, aparte de los mares del Índico, era «el carácter, la visión y el sentimiento de los primeros veinte años que fui independiente en mi vida». La colección tuvo un gran éxito, y los títulos que la componen no dejaron de ser, desde entonces, conti-nuamente reeditados, «Una sonrisa de la fortuna», que discurre en una isla llamada la Perla del Océano, es, en su conclusión, la historia de un negocio feliz, pero a lo largo de ella se ve cómo «el hombre, e incluso el hombre de mar, es un animal caprichoso, criatura y víctima de las oportunidades perdidas». El segundo de los relatos, «Quien compartió en secreto», trata el tema del doble y su poder de sugerencia lo ha hecho merecedor, en la bibliografía conradiana, de al menos tantas interpretaciones como El corazón de las tinieblas. Por último, «Freya, la de las Siete Islas», aunque su narrador se empeñe en presentar a sus personajes como tipos «de comedia» (un padre bonachón, su romántica hija, el apuesto capitán con el que planea fugarse y un desagradable teniente holandés), avanza imparable hacia «la oportunidad de saborear la venganza en una increíble, trascendental perfección»: constituye tal vez una de las historias más graves y desoladoras surgidas de la imaginación de Conrad.
