El término “artes y oficios” se popularizó en Chile en el siglo XIX para designar a las artesanías industrializadas. En esta compilación de estudios hemos ampliado esta definición a conjuntos de saberes manuales orientados a la producción artesanal y semiindustrial, intencionando su des-inscripción de categorías fijas y binarias que distinguen el arte de la artesanía, la alta cultura de la baja o popular, el trabajo del ocio, lo creativo de lo repetitivo y la tradición de la originalidad. A partir de esta expansión, proponemos dar forma a algunas de las historias compartidas sobre el arte, la arquitectura, el diseño y las artes aplicadas y decorativas en Chile. La disciplina que actúa como bisagra de estos relatos es la historia, con el objetivo de poner en relación episodios que visibilizan el impulso o la asociación de voluntades para la formación, producción, exhibición y difusión de saberes artesanales. En este sentido, se enfoca en el estudio de las instituciones que han albergado la enseñanza de las artes y oficios en los siglos XIX y XX, recogiendo los debates en torno al rol de las artes y los oficios en la construcción del Estado-nación. Al mismo tiempo, toma distancia de ellos para observar las contradicciones, las tensiones y también las frustraciones asociadas a la instalación de sistemas de producción local.
