Excerpt from Historical Studies I can offer no better apology for the republication of the following papers than that there are some things in them which I wished to preserve; and in thus grouping them together under the name of Historical Studies, I have given them the title which seemed best suited to their nature and their origin. They are a record, too, of pleasant hours, and of studies to which I had fondly looked for fuller and better results. The extensive plans which I had once formed for a history of Italy may, perhaps, never be accomplished. The partial loss of sight and the want of books are serious obstacles in an undertaking which requires a full command of both. But though I would not willingly renounce my hopes of the future, yet with such reasons for looking towards it doubtfully, I may not, perhaps, be held altogether inexcusable for clinging so tenaciously to the past. Excerpt from Historical Studies and Recreations, Vol. 1 Or the five works included in these volumes, three were originally published by the author under the nom de plume of J. A. G. Barton, While the fourth and fifth have appeared, in part only, in the pages of two Indian Maga zines. Their collection in the form in which they are now presented has hardly any justification, except in the author's wish to bring them all forward a second time before the reading public. Those which appeared in book form before were largely, and, for the most part, very indulgently reviewed, and extracts from some of these notices are appended to the second volume. Excerpt from Toward the Understanding of Jesus: And Other Historical Studies To the reader Rome's Fall Reconsidered may seem an obvious continuation of my Hay and History which was published first in The Political Science Quarterly in 1913. The general thesis is clearly developed there, yet it was another circumstance that led me to reconsider Rome's Fall. Excerpt from Studies in English Official Historical Documents Amongst the numerous works which have dealt, at different times, with the history of the Public Records and with the description of their nature or uses, it is scarcely surprising that the great majority are due to the professional zeal of native archivists. We should also be prepared to find that, with several important exceptions these works have been produced by private and not by official enterprise. The bibliography of this class of antiquarian literature is, indeed, extensive and includes, besides the elementary essays of 16th and 17th century official antiquaries, several valuable works produced during the Victorian period. Moreover, during the last thirty years, these unofficial printed books may be supplemented by numerous articles and other periodical essays which are not exclusively published in antiquarian journals. At the same time none of these published books or articles will be found to deal in a comprehensive manner with the several aspects of the national Archives which concern the historical student. The practical Guide to the official sources does not indulge in any disquisitions upon their formulas or scripts. Similarly the hand-book of Palaeography is not concerned with the historical aspect of these documents, nor does the essay in Diplomatic deal with the principles of their classification. Excerpt from Curious Bypaths of History: Being Medico-Historical Studies and Observations English toned down to the point of delicac, Avhile others scarcely capable of such attention were left to languish in their original garb untranslated. But even these precautions were not sufficient for what honest old Doctor Johnson would have stigmatised as, the muckand gutter-hunters, and copies sent out for review were quietly appropriated without the slightest mention or, in one or two instances, only criticised and attacked. The latter course, we do not deny, is the right of every journal that receives a book for review; but the principle which will allow the acceptance of a work sent for a specific purpose without the least attempt or intention to carry out that purpose, belongs, it appears to our rude mind, to a code of Ethics bordering on what in thieves slang is known as finger-smithing. Not until it was too late for us to withdraw, did we realise how little a fearless handling of history is relished across the Channel. And yet the work in its French dress was received with acclamation by every journalist throughout the Continent, and hundreds of flattering reviews helped to quicken the sale of what constitutes one of the most unique works of historical science. Some English journals, however, less fearful of Mother Grundy than their fellows, gave the book kindly welcome enough. Amongst these we may mention The Star (October 5th); The Bochdale Observer (October 9 th); The Boston Daily Globe (June 12th). The Jamaica Post (July 5th). This ably edited paper devoted a long article to the book and predicted success for it throughout the British Empire and the United States comparing it toG. W.M. Reynolds 3 ftsme. fo the Court of London, with the difference that the latter was founded on fiction whereas Dr. Cabanas work is founded on history. So far as our purview goes, concluded the reviewer, there is nothing in literature with which it can be compared. Excerpt from Studies in American History Not only is there this dramatic advantage, as we may call it, in the use of the source, but it has the further advantage of giving historic training from the very start. In using the sources, the pupil must do his own feeling and thinking; no one tells him that Drake was a pirate, or that the last days of Columbus were pathetic and bitter with ingratitude; he has the chance to see these things for himself; his Opinions are formed, his sympathies aroused, by the nearest possible contact with the man and the deed. In this way, the use Of the source has a vast advantage over the mere reading Of a narrative. The use of the source means the use of one's faculties upon it, and beside it the reading of a narrative is but passive work. In the latter case, the work is already done; the sources alone give one a chance to study history rather than to read it, and to interpret it according to the light of his own time. The narrative is like a painted curtain before the drama of life which you behold in the sources. But in that very drama we must train our children to play their part. Excerpt from Historical Essays and Studies The elevation of his rival, the King of Spain, suddenly raised England to an important position in the politics of Europe. An auction began, at which Francis I. Sought to purchase her friendship with gold; whilst Charles V. Not only Offered the same sums as his competitor, but increase of territory at his competitor's expense. France was still our hereditary enemy. England remembered that an English King had been crowned in the French capital and Calais was an irritating memorial of the lost inheritance, and of conquests that had ended in defeat. The nation adopted with joy the alliance with the House of Burgundy, and Parliament voted supplies for war against France. Excerpt from The Writing of History, an Introduction to Historical Method This volume is not a revised edition of my Outline of Historical Method; it is an entirely new work. It was written for college students who are beginning their studies in historical research, for teachers of history who have had no critical historical training, and for students of history who are hoping to find in' private study some compensation for opportuni ties not enjoyed in college. This book does not as pire to fill the place of Bernheim's Lehrbuch, but rather to guide the student through his first steps in research, and to prepare him for the study of Bern heim. In a word, it is an introduction to bistori cal method. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
