The two authors are experienced and highly qualified Belgian scholars and the book looks carefully at events relating to school mathematics for the period from the end of World War II to 2010. Initially the book focuses on events which helped to define the modern mathematics revolution in Belgium before and during the 1960s. The book does much more than that, however, for it traces the influence of these events on national and international debates during the early phases of the reform. By providing readers with translations into English of relevant sections of key Continental documents outlining the major ideas of leading Continental scholars who contributed to the “Mathématique Moderne” movement, this book makes available to a wide readership, the theoretical, social, and political backdrops of Continental new mathematics reforms. In particular, the book focuses on the contributions made by Belgians such as Paul Libois, Willy Servais, Frédérique Lenger, and Georges Papy. The influence of modern mathematics fell away rapidly in the 1970s, however, and the authors trace the rise and fall, from that time into the 21st century, of a number of other approaches to school mathematics—in Belgium, in other Western European nations, and in North America. In summary, this is an outstanding, landmark publication displaying the fruits of deep scholarship and careful research based on extensive analyses of primary sources.

The international New Math developments between about 1950 through 1980, are regarded by many mathematics educators and education historians as the most historically important development in curricula of the twentieth century. It attracted the attention of local and international politicians, of teachers, and of parents, and influenced the teaching and learning of mathematics at all levels—kindergarten to college graduate—in many nations. After garnering much initial support it began to attract criticism. But, as Bill Jacob and the late Jerry Becker show in Chapter 17, some of the effects became entrenched. This volume, edited by Professor Dirk De Bock, of Belgium, provides an outstanding overview of the New Math/modern mathematics movement. Chapter authors provide exceptionally high-quality analyses of the rise of the movement, and of subsequent developments, within a range of nations. The first few chapters show how the initial leadership came from mathematicians in European nations and in the United States of America. The background leaders in Europe were Caleb Gattegno and members of a mysterious group of mainly French pure mathematicians, who since the 1930s had published under the name of (a fictitious) “Nicolas Bourbaki.” In the United States, there emerged, during the 1950s various attempts to improve U.S. mathematics curricula and teaching, especially in secondary schools and colleges. This side of the story climaxed in 1957 when the Soviet Union succeeded in launching “Sputnik,” the first satellite. Undoubtedly, this is a landmark publication in education. The foreword was written by Professor Bob Moon, one of a few other scholars to have written on the New Math from an international perspective. The final “epilogue” chapter, by Professor Geert Vanpaemel, a historian, draws together the overall thrust of the volume, and makes links with the general history of curriculum development, especially in science education, including recent globalization trends.

Vlaanderen kent een grote diversiteit aan landschappen met een extreme overlapping tussen platteland en stad en de ermee gepaard gaande multifunctionaliteit. Deze regio vormt daarom bij uitstek een boeiend laboratorium voor onderzoek, opleiding en praktijk in landschapsontwerp. Toch is landschapsontwerp hier opvallend minder geprofessionaliseerd of verankerd dan in vele andere Europese landen. De invloed ervan op het ruimtelijk beleid is klein en ook in een internationale context lijkt het Vlaamse landschapsontwerp zich maar moeizaam te kunnen positioneren. Dit boek schetst eerst in hoofdlijnen hoe de professionalisering en institutionalisering van het landschapsontwerp zich in Vlaanderen historisch heeft verdergezet. Daarna toont het aan dat verschillende interpretaties van landschap het hedendaagse ruimtelijk ontwerp van publieke ruimten bevruchten en hoe landschap hier als een narratief medium gebruik van maakt. Het verduidelijkt dat landschap - in overeenstemming met de holistische benadering in de Europese Landschapsconventie - een kneedbaar, multidimensionaal en integrerend concept is dat door ontwerpers wordt geïnterpreteerd vanuit de eigen perceptie en in functie van specifieke instrumenten of acties. Deze bevindingen leiden tot reflecties over de identiteit en de rol van landschapsontwerp in Vlaanderen en in internationale context. Het manuscript biedt binnen de literatuur rond ruimtelijk ontwerp in Vlaanderen belangrijke en vernieuwende inzichten. Door de multidisciplinaire benadering zal het landschapsarchitecten, architecten, ruimtelijk planners en stedenbouwkundigen aanspreken, maar ook aanverwante disciplines, zoals geografen, historici of biologen. Karel Van de Woestijne (1878-1929) is een fascinerende persoonlijkheid. Amper achttien jaar oud steekt hij met kop en schouders boven de Vlaamse dichters van zijn tijd uit en verbluft hij oudere vrienden met zijn belezenheid en zijn talent. Uit zijn pen vloeien meesterlijke verzen die moeiteloos kunnen concurreren met Maeterlinck, Verlaine en Verhaeren. Achter de façade van deze getalenteerde dichter schuilt een man met een dubbelzinnig karakter. Van de Woestijne wordt opgevoed in het Frans, maar beslist in het Nederlands te schrijven. Hij dweept in zijn jeugd met het anarchisme, maar omarmt later het christendom en wordt een haast mystiek dichter. Hij verkettert in zijn poëzie de vrouw, maar blijft zijn echtgenote levenslang trouw. In zijn verzen spreekt hij als een vermoeide, getormenteerde ziel, maar in de praktijk blijkt de dichter over een enorme werkkracht en veel zin voor humor te beschikken. Meer dan twintig jaar lang verslaat Van de Woestijne op onnavolgbare wijze het politieke en culturele leven in Brussel als correspondent van de Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant. Daarnaast bouwt hij moeizaam een ambtenarencarrière uit. Later wordt hij kabinetssecretaris van minister Jules Destreé en, zonder enig diploma, professor aan de universiteit van Gent. Over zijn huwelijk kan een heel boek geschreven worden, noteerde Streuvels ooit. Ook zijn relatie met uitgevers en vrienden, met zijn Duitse censor en met de politieke wereld roept vragen op. Na jaren van geduldig onderzoek licht Peter Theunynck een tip van de sluier op en doorprikt hij de zorgvuldig opgebouwde mythe rond de persoon van Karel Van de Woestijne.

De Faculteit Bio-ingenieurswetenschappen van de K.U.Leuven vierde tijdens het academiejaar 2003-2004 haar 125-jarig jubileum. In 1878 werd immers in Leuven een hogere landbouwschool opgericht, als exponent van de vernieuwde katholieke aandacht voor het platteland, maar ook als reactie op de Rijkslandbouwschool in Gembloux. In de loop van haar bestaan groeide het Institut Agronomique, later ook Landbouwinstituut, uit tot een vooraanstaande onderzoeks- en onderwijsinstelling die de ontwikkelingen in de landbouwsector en daarbuiten op de voet volgde. Na de omvorming tot zelfstandige universitaire faculteit in 1965 en de inhoudelijke verruiming van opleiding en onderzoek tot alles wat met levende materie te maken heeft, kende de faculteit een explosieve groei. Een logisch gevolg hiervan is de recente naamsverandering in Faculteit Bio-ingenieurswetenschappen.
