Jeder von uns hat täglich Geld in der Hand. Wir kaufen Lebensmittel mit Banknoten und Münzen, zahlen es auf unsere Konten ein, um Miete, Strom- und Wasserrechnungen zu begleichen. Wir arbeiten hart, um an dieses Zahlungsmittel zu gelangen und damit unser Leben auszugestalten. Geld bestimmt unseren Alltag entscheidend mit und zeigt uns Grenzen auf. So kann es darüber bestimmen, welche Kleidung wir tragen oder wie weit eine Reise gehen kann. Zahlungsmittel begleiten uns durch die Geschichte hindurch. Sie sind Mittel und Gegenstand zum Erwerb von Waren, zur Bezahlung einer Dienstleistung oder zur Begleichung von Schulden. Als historische Quelle sind Zahlungsmittel Sachzeugnis vergangener Zeiten, alltägliche Gegenstände, die durch Jahrtausende hindurch nahezu denselben Zweck erfüllt haben. Bereits seit fast 3000 Jahren gibt es Zahlungsmittel in der uns heute geläufigen Form: die Münze. Waren frühe Münzen zunächst nur Elektronklumpen, in die ein lydischer Herrscher ein einfaches Symbol als Zeichen der Werthaltigkeit prägen ließ, so sind sie heute Kunst- und Designwerke wie auch Hightechprodukte. Seit die ersten Münzen ausgegeben wurden, zierten Herrschersymbole, Porträts, Alltagsszenen und Götterbildnisse auf vielfältigste Weise diese Zahlungsmittel. Weil jedermann sie wegen ihrer Werthaltigkeit begehrte, stellten sie ein Medium zur Kommunikation zwischen Herrschern und Untertanen dar, auf denen sich der Herrschaftsanspruch des Monarchen über seine Untertanen ausdrückte oder auch ein politisches Programm verkündet wurde. Doch wie können wir uns die Menschen vorstellen, mit denen der Herrscher über das Geld kommunizierte? Können wir uns eine Vorstellung davon machen, wie sie aussahen, was sie dachten und fühlten, eine Idee von der Zeit entwickeln, in der dieses Zahlungsmittel verwendet wurde? Inwieweit können uns Münzen und Banknoten ein Bild ihrer Zeit vermitteln? Inwieweit eigenen sich authentische historische Zahlungsmittel für den Geschichtsunterricht, um anhand dieser eine Vorstellung von Vergangenheit zu geben und Vergangenheit zu rekonstruieren? Wie können wir anhand authentischer Zahlungsmittel auf ihre zeitgenössische Rezeption schließen? Gibt uns ein historisches Zahlungsmittel Hinweise auf die narrative Identität einer bestimmten Epoche? Baetica, the present-day region of Andalusia in southern Spain, was the wealthiest province of the Roman Empire. Its society was dynamic and marked by upward social and economic mobility, as the imperial peace allowed the emergence of a substantial middle social and economic stratum. Indeed, so mutually beneficial was the imposition of Roman rule on the local population of Baetica that it demands a new understanding of the relationship between Imperial Rome and its provinces. Baetica Felix builds a new model of Roman-provincial relations through a socio-economic history of the province from Julius Caesar to the end of the second century A.D. Describing and analyzing the impact of Roman rule on a core province, Evan Haley addresses two broad questions: what effect did Roman rule have on patterns of settlement and production in Baetica, and how did it contribute to wealth generation and social mobility? His findings conclusively demonstrate that meeting the multiple demands of the Roman state created a substantial freeborn and ex-slave "middle stratum" of the population that outnumbered both the super-rich elite and the destitute poor.
