This is due largely to the fact that not enough books of a more or less popular nature have been written on this subject. Excerpt from History of Missouri: A Text Book of State History for Use in Elementary Schools Much has been said and written recently concerning the teaching of Citizenship. History has long been recognized as a subject which has great value for this purpose. The desire to make loyal citizens of our boys and girls gave History a place in our public schools soon after the Civil War. For some reason the results obtained in the teaching of History have not been as satisfactory from the standpoint of good citizenship as is desirable. The author believes that one of the chief reasons for the failure to realize these practical results is to be found in both the method and material used in our teaching of History. Good citizenship consists largely in the ability of an individual to adjust himself to the community environment in which he lives. Any community is what it is because of its past. To understand a community it is necessary to know its History. But our Historians usually begin with Columbus, a native of a foreign country and of a different age, and they seldom get closer to the environment of the child than Massachusetts. The well established pedagogical principle of proceeding from the known to the unknown is ignored. A noted educator has said, "We should begin with the boy, where he is, while he is there." State History furnishes the material which connects the life of the child and the local community with events of historical importance in our national life. Excerpt from Civil Government: Of the United States and the State of Missouri When the State text-book Commission met in the year 1897 to adopt a series Of text-books for use in public schools, about thirty civil governments were submitted for adoption. None Of them was satisfactory. Thereupon members Of the commission who were acquainted with my School History Of Missouri suggested that I write and submit a manuscript Of a Civil Government. I did so, and it was adopted, and for five years after its publication it had a large place in the schools. Subsequently the book was entirely rewritten and a revised edition brought out in 1904, and with a few minor changes in the text made necessary by changes in laws and constitutions has been in general use ever since. Within the last year the book has been thoroughly revised again. In the natural evolution of the government Of a great people new institutions are added in the course Of a few years and things once unimportant assume large proportions; they call for new sections, and these have been added. Other things have become less important, and the discussion Of them has been accordingly reduced. Every sentence Of former texts retained in this has been rigidly tested, in order to bring it strictly up to date and make it accurately express the fact. Excerpt from The Civil Government of the United States and the State of Missouri, And, the History of Missouri From the Earliest Times to the Present In offering this little History for use in public and other schools I am not without the hope that it may aid in inspir ing the young with a purpose to make Missouri the bright est and best of the constellation of States. Our State at this time has a population almost as large as all the States had at the time of the formation of the Union in 1789. Our peo ple have come from every State and almost every nation. This may be indicative of strength or of weakness. It is a heterogeneous people that should become homogeneous in feeling, purpose and State-pride. But this is far from the case. Many Virginians who have lived on our soil for a quarter of a century are yet Virginians; immigrants from New England are yet New Englanders; and the same is true of the settlers from almost every State and country. We still go to other States for our leading preachers, judges, lawyers and educators. This ought not to be. We need to exalt our State by relying more on our own right arm, by believing more in each other. It is also true that we have a history of which we mayjustly be proud. Few States have so charmlng and important a story. But it has rarely been told. The children in our schools know far more of the history of the Atlantic States than of their own. It is the Opinion of the author that a fuller acquaintance with Missouri's history will make her population a much stronger, a more patriotic and a happier people. Knowledge of our own deeds and convictions and glory will create mutual con fidence and admiration, and then business enterprise, moral culture, and intellectual emulation will follow, and more rapidly than ever before. As a native of the State, I may be permitted to wish that this volume will do its share in helping toward these good results.
