Excerpt from History of Colorado, Vol. 2 Among the men whose careers reflect honor and credit upon the state that has honored them, none has risen to a position of higher distinction or left more indelibly his impress upon the history of the nation than did Senator Henry M. Teller. His ability to thoroughly grasp every point in all the great problems of the country, to look at any question from the broad standpoint of future needs as well as present opportunities, made him the peer of the ablest statesmen of America. Removing to the west with its boundless opportunities, he became one of the builders of the great western empire and the recognition of the important part which he was playing made him not only a leader of public thought and action in Colorado but in the nation as well. Excerpt from History of Colorado, Vol. 4 of 5: Biographical Bishop Spalding was born August 25, 1828, in Belgrade, Maine, and came of an old and patriotic family of Puritan stock. He was the seventh in line of descent from Edward Spalding, who sailed from England to America in 1619, a year before the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock, and whose demise occurred in 1670. His son John was the father of Joseph, who had a son named John. Among the children of the last named was Jesse, whose son John was the father of the Rev. John Franklin Spalding of this review. Bishop Spalding completed a course in Bowdoin College in 1853 and in 1857 was graduated from the General Theological Seminary of New York. Returning to his native state, he was made a deacon in St. Stephen's Episcopal church at Portland, Maine, July 8, 1857, and was ordained to the priesthood July 14. Excerpt from History of Colorado, Vol. 3 of 3: Prepared Under the Supervision of the State Historical and Natural History Society of Colorado With the prospectors seeking gold in our mountains in 1858 and 1859 there was little need for banks. Most of these Argonauts were poor. Their wealth consisted only of their personal belongings, supplies and provisions. They had little money and there was little need for any. The great West was yet to be opened to industry and commerce. In general it was uninhabited, save for wandering tribes of Indians. The scattered traders carried on their business by barter and in the primitive state of development of the western country no banking services were in demand. Excerpt from History of the State of Colorado, Vol. 4 Every earnest endeavor to trace out the archæology of Colorado, will inevitably lead to an investigation of the prehistoric races and conditions of the American continent. About all the light we have concerning the peculiar race which ages ago occupied a portion of the southwestern division of our State, lies in the very full and extremely interesting reports rendered by Holmes and Jackson of the United States Geological Survey, and published in Prof. F. V. Hayden's report of 1876, which, together with the opinions of eminent ethnologists who have given close attention to the subject, have been freely quoted in the following pages wherein our ancient beginnings are epitomized. It is well to state in this connection, that the manuscript of the first five chapters of this work was submitted to, and approved by Mr. Jackson, who has been for some years an honored resident of Denver. As to the character of the people who built the remarkable structures described, and the ethnical relations of the modern Pueblos to them, it is a fair presumption that we derive some knowledge of their civilization, habits, customs, industries and home life, from the writings of Castaneda, the historian of Coronado's expedition, for it may be assumed that the natives whom he met were much the same in matters of habit and modes of living as their ancestors, who first occupied the region.
