Excerpt from History of Dissenters, Vol. 1 of 4: From the Revolution in 1688, to the Year 1808 That the interests of religion may be eminently promoted by the records of its history, will be denied by no one who duly reflects that the pen of inspira tion was employed to write the annals of the earliest ages of the church. Ecclesiastical history forms_ a large portion of the Old Testament; and the first years of the Christian church, when it was under the direction of the inspired apostles, are recorded in the sacred history of the Acts. This divine book would be the model, as well as the commencement of the history of Christianity, were it possible for any, who are not endued with the same inspiration, to approach the inimitable grace with which the moral uses are there wrought into the relation of the facts. But as we must not be silent, because we cannot preach like Raul; so neither should we suffer the remembrance of the divine conduct towards the church to die away in oblivion, because we cannot record it with the pen of Luke. Excerpt from History of Dissenters, Vol. 4 of 4: From the Revolution in 1688, to the Year 1808 This celebrated baronet was born about-the year 1637. His father was one of the first English gen; tlemen honoured with the new title. He married thedaughter of Charles F leetwood, esq. But was, in 1711, deprived of this lady, whom Dr. Watts de scribes ih her funeral sermon as a woman of eminent religion. From the same writer we, learn, that sir John joined the independent church over which Dr. Owen presided, and continued an honourable member, under successive pastors, to the day of his death. Boldly patronising the despised cause of the dissenters, amidst the fiercest persecutions, he was a devout and diligent attendant on their public worship, till the infirmities of years confined him to his private and domestic devotions. He frequently instructed his family by reading to them the dis courses which he had written from the lips of the first preachers in his early days; and to him we owe many of those which are contained in the folio volume of sermons and tracts by Dr. Owen, with whom he maintained the most endeared friendship. Excerpt from History of Dissenters, Vol. 2 of 4: From the Revolution in 1688, to the Year 1808 To the enlightened reader, ecclesiastical history will forcibly Suggest the unspeakable importance of good ministers, in order to the support and advancement of the cause of Christ. Where they are wanting, every thing goes wrong; where they abound, the honour of God, and the happiness of man are extensively secured. In the formation of the character of a minister of Christ, two things are previously necessary, talents and piety, which in the language of the holy Scriptures are named gifts and graces. But these may be considered rather as radical powers, than an actual preparation for the office. Whatever talents a person may possess, we can view them in no higher light than a capacity of being qualified, not the qualification itself. As to the measure of talents requisite, they should not fell below mediocrity: the higher they rise above it, the greater benefit will accrue to the church of Christ. Excerpt from History of Dissenters, From the Revolution in 1688, to the Year 1808, Vol. 3 of 4 Oliver Cromwell, in a book which he published, consisting of extracts from various authors, speaks of the eloquence and elegance of the sacred Scriptures, and asks where are now our anabaptists and plain pack-stafi' methodists, who esteem all flowers of rhetoric in sermons, no better than stinking weeds i' Ey'the anabaptists, we know that he means a de nomination of Christians, 'which still exists; and' though'we have not at this time, any particular se count of themethodists of that day, the ecclesiastical wasp, Thomas Edwards, in his Gangrasna enumerateb many sects, some of which we admit were only local nick-names of the principal communions, but others may have been ephemeral sects, the produce of that fertile period, of whom we have no history because they had no duration. Among these, there seem to have been some, who were called methodists, Who distinguished themselves by plainness of speech, re jecting'e aids of literature and the ornaments of eloquence in their public sermons. This might have been known to the fellow of Merton, who has the honour of reviving this name, and giving it to the modern sect.
