Excerpt from History of Methodism in Arkansas For a number of years I have greatly desired to see a well-written history of Methodism in Arkansas, and sincerely hoped that some one thoroughly qualified for the work would undertake the task. In 1869, the Little Rock Annual Conference passed this resolution: "Resolved, That the Presiding Elders be, and are hereby constituted, a Committee on the History of Methodism in Arkansas, to collect items of interest connected therewith." If anything ever came of this action of the Conference I have never heard of it. In 1878, or near that time, the White River Conference requested Rev. John M. Steele to undertake the work of preparing a history of Methodism in Arkansas. He immediately began the collection of material for the work, and had succeeded in collecting much valuable information, but was called away by death before it was completed. It was left in such condition that no one else could properly arrange the material he had collected. I have undertaken to gather up the material that has been preserved in the minutes of the Annual Conferences, in District and Quarterly Conference records; in manuscripts written by some of our old pioneer preachers, in articles written for our Church papers; in memoirs of our deceased preachers; in letters from brethren and friends; in incidental allusion found in books, and in conversation with old residents of the State. From the information gathered from all these sources, I have endeavored to present a connected history of Methodism in Arkansas. In many instances where I had to depend upon the personal recollection of brethren, I found the dates to be conflicting, and in such cases I have reconciled the dates as best I could. Excerpt from History of the Origin of the Free Methodist Church But, though Methodism has changed its home, it has in no wise changed either its character or its mode of Opera tion. And hence, as it fled to the Free Methodists to escape the trammels of worldly associations, a time-serving policy, and the soul-sickening routine of a lifeless formal ism it could no longer endure; so will it in like manner abandon them, should the contingency ever arise, when it is no longer permitted to operate through their instru mentality in accordance with its own peculiar principles and purposes. Excerpt from The Birth of Methodism in America: With Photographs T is nearly a century and a half since the birth of Methodism in 1 America. From that angel-guarded cradle has grown a family numbering about one fifth of the population of the United States. This wonderful growth from so humble a birth has attracted the attention of the world. It has wielded a tremendous power in spreading the gospel of jesus Christ throughout the land which has had so much to do in shaping our present civilization. The purpose Of this little volume is not to give the history of Methodism in the United States, but to give all the history that is obtainable Of the Father Of Methodism in America. This is best accomplished by publishing the oration and addresses of the emi nent Methodists who participated in the ceremonies on the occa sion Of the removal Of the remains of the Father Of Methodism in America, and at the unveiling of the beautiful monument at Cam bridge, New York, erected by the National Local Preachers' Asso ciation of the' Methodist Episcopal Church to his memory. The aim Of the publisher is to perpetuate the name of the Father Of Methodism in America, and his contemporaries - names quite unknown, perhaps, to many of the present generation, but names honored and revered by all Methodists familiar with the early history of the Methodist Church in America. The beautiful half-tone photographs in this little volume are priceless. The plates from which they are taken are the only ones in existence and cannot be duplicated, thus making this little book a historical souvenir of great value. Excerpt from The Illustrated History of Methodism: The Story of the Origin and Progress of the Methodist Church, From Its Foundation by John Wesley to the Present Day The history of Methodism cannot be faithfully written without due atten tion to the work of its pioneer itinerants. N 0 romance of chivalry, whether it be adventures of Crusaders or of the Knights of Arthur's court, can surpass in fascinating and thrilling interest the faithful and simple record of these heroic lives. What the Pilgrims in the cabin of the Mayflower were to New England, that the Christmas Conference of Methodist itinerants at Balti more was to the rising commonwealths of the South and West.
