Nero's reign (AD 54–68) witnessed some of the most memorable events in Roman history, such as the rebellion of Boudica and the first persecution of the Christians—not to mention Nero's murder of his mother, his tyranny and extravagance, and his suicide, which plunged the empire into civil war. The Emperor Nero gathers into a single collection the major sources for Nero's life and rule, providing students of Nero and ancient Rome with the most authoritative and accessible reader there is. The Emperor Nero features clear, contemporary translations of key literary sources along with translations and explanations of representative inscriptions and coins issued under Nero. The informative introduction situates the emperor's reign within the history of the Roman Empire, and the book's concise headnotes to chapters place the source material in historical and biographical context. Passages are accompanied by detailed notes and are organized around events, such as the Great Fire of Rome, or by topic, such as Nero's relationships with his wives. Complex events like the war with Parthia—split up among several chapters in Tacitus's Annals—are brought together in continuous narratives, making this the most comprehensible and user-friendly sourcebook on Nero available.

The violent, bloody, and incredible story of Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (37-68 AD), who was Roman Emperor from 54 to 68, forms the basis of this highly readable and compelling work by master storyteller and popular historian Jacob Abbott. Beginning with the previous emperors Caligula and Claudius, Abbott lays the groundwork for Nero's early years and family background. Nero was adopted by his great-uncle Claudius to become his heir and successor, and succeeded to the throne after Claudius's death. The author is careful to make sure that all the details he provides are accurate and sourced-and then presents to the reader a whirlwind of drama, intrigue, amazing extravagance, and ultimately, madness, centered around the highest office in the Roman Empire. As Nero's personal behavior became more and more erratic, he accumulated endless enemies at home. This resulted in assassination conspiracies-all of them unsuccessful, but increasingly desperate and causing a spiral of retaliation and cruelty. Finally, in 68, the rebellion of Vindex in Gaul, and later the acclamation of Galba in Hispania, drove Nero from the throne. Threatened with death by execution, Nero committed suicide, finally ending the Julio-Claudian Dynasty."In writing the series of historical narratives to which the present work pertains, it has been the object of the author to furnish to the reading community of this country an accurate and faithful account of the lives and actions of the several personages that are made successively the subjects of the volumes, following precisely the story which has come down to us from ancient times. The writer has spared no pains to gain access in all cases to the original sources of information, and has confined himself strictly to them.

Excerpt from A Critical Study of the Sources of the History of the Emperor Nero Our sources of the history of Nero and his reign are not very numerous. Fortunately, we have the works of three of the historians who wrote on this period at a time that was not so remote as to render their records of little value. (Chapters XII-XVI of the Annals of Tacitus (c.55-120 A. D.) cover the reign of Nero to the year 66 A. D., including his relation to Claudius during the last years of that emperor, and are so far complete. The Life of Nero by Suetonius (c.75-160 A. D.) has come down to us entire. Of the History of Nero by Dio Cassius (born 155 A. D.) in his Roman History, Books 61-63, we have only the abridgment of Xiphilinus and the extracts of Zonaras. Xiphilinus was a monk of the eleventh century who at the request of Michael VII (1071-78) wrote an epitome of Books 36-80 of the History of Dio Cassius, the last twenty of which would otherwise have been lost. Considering Dio's mode of writing, we are inclined to think that by the abridgment not much of the substance of the original work has been lost. Moreover, the work of Johannes Zonaras, a Byzantine historian of the middle of the twelfth century, in his Epitome of History (from creation to 1118 A. D.), as far as the history of Nero and other Roman emperors is concerned, consists in the main of excerpts from Dio, and thus he supplies in the passages that can be recognized as such, some of the parts that are lacking in the abridgment of Xiphilinus. There are but a few other sources, and these are all quite meager, as far at least as the history of the emperor is concerned. A few fragments of early Roman historians remain. A small number of inscriptions has been preserved, and a larger number of Roman and other coins of that period. The work of Josephus (b. 37 A. D.) on the Antiquities of the Jews extends to the twelfth year of Nero's reign; but it is, in the first place, a history of the Jewish people, and then the work was written by the Flavian courtier with the intention to create among the Greeks and Romans a higher opinion of his despised people, and, on the other hand, the author was profuse in the flattery of his patrons, among whom Poppaea, the wife of Nero, had been, and whenever there was an occasion to flatter he was not much concerned about the truth. Abraham Lincoln raved that this series of historical biographies gave him "just that knowledge of past men and events which I need. I have read them with the greatest interest. To them I am indebted for about all the historical knowledge I have." Considered what we would now call "young adult" literature, this collection, first published between 1848 and 1871, was designed to present a clear, distinct, connected narrative of the lives of the great figures of world history, those people who have been most influential, at least as American author and educator JACOB ABBOTT (1803-1879) saw it from his 19th-century perspective. Wildly popular and republished many times under different collected names, this replica set mimics the 1904 reprint known as the "Makers of History" series. It will delight students of history as well as show the scholar how history telling has changed over the last few centuries. More than 30 other volumes in the series are also available from Cosimo Classics. This volume, dating from 1853, covers Roman emperor Nero (37-68), from the assassination of Caligula, which led to his ascension to the throne, to the depravity and conspiracy that characterized his reign, and much more.

The years from the battle of Actium to the death of Nero stand at the very heart of Roman history. Yet the sources of this key period, particularly the inscriptions, papyri and coins, are not readily accessible. Crucial new discoveries remain buried in learned periodicals, and now that the study of the ancient world is widespread among those without Latin and Greek, the lack of translations is proving a serious handicap. Augustus to Nero, first published in 1985, contains numerous texts not only for students of traditional political history, but also of those interested in social and economic history. An introductory essay establishes a broad methodological framework within which each text may be understood. The focus throughout is on less well-known literary evidence: for example, the significant poetry of Crinagoras and Calpurnius Siculus. Inaccessible sources are here collected and translated: brief notes are supplied to help the reader.
