Excerpt from Religious Thought in England, From the Reformation to the End of Last Century, Vol. 3: A Contribution to the History of Theology At the end of a work so extensive as this, an author, I suppose, always feels how much better it would be done if he had it to do again. When I began I had but a partial knowledge of the ground to be traversed, and of a few important parts I knew nothing. This is the cause of one or two irregularities which otherwise would have been avoided. Some writers, for instance, are noticed at more length than others who are perhaps of greater importance. In the preface to my essay on Pantheism I have recorded the circumstances which determined me to devote some years to the special study of theology. When I came to London, in 1859, I began a course of reading with the object of inquiring into the nature of revelation and the evidences by which it is supported. At the end of four years I had formed a plan of something like a complete history of theology, which would set forth the special character of Christianity and its relation to other religions. In the spring of 1863 I showed the outlines of my work to the late Professor Maurice, who had gone over large portions of the same field, and whose writings had been of great service to me. Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 3 This Work, which is designed to finish the History of our Reformation, seems reserved to be laid at your Majesty's feet; who, we trust, is designed by God to complete the Reformation itself. To rectify what may be yet amiss, and to supply what is defective among us; to oblige us to live and to labour more suitably to our profession; to unite us more firmly among ourselves; to bury, and for ever to extinguish, the fears of our relapsing again into popery; and to establish a confidence and correspondence with the protestant and reformed churches abroad. The eminent moderation of the most serene house from which your Majesty is descended, gives us auspicious hopes, that as God has now raised your Majesty, with signal characters of an amazing Providence, to be the head and the chief strength of the Reformation; so your Majesty will, by a wise and noble conduct, form all these churches into one body; so that, though they cannot agree to the same opinions and rituals with us in all points, yet they may join in one happy confederacy, for the support of the whole, and of every particular branch of that sacred union. Excerpt from Dodd's Church History of England, Vol. 3: From the Commencement of the Sixteenth Century to the Revolution in 1688 Were the reformers, that suffered in queen Mary's reign, all rebels? Did they not all die for disobeying the laws of the nation, then in force against them Foreign education is no less an inconvenience to Catholics, than an eye-sore and ground of suspicion to reformers. But who, and what was it that put them upon the expedient? Did not the reformers exclude them from their schools and universities? And was it not conscience alone that obliged them to embrace that method? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
