2024 marks the 100-year anniversary of the winter sports week festival celebrated in Chamonix in 1924, which is now recognized as the first Olympic Winter Games. As a globally watched quadrennial mega-event, the Winter Olympics is unique from both summer sport festivals and other winter festivals, such as the Winter X Games. This book explores the impacts, issues, and legacies of the past century of the Olympic Winter Games. Grounded in sport history, the chapters in this volume draw on the disciplines of cultural history, diplomatic history, global history, environmental history, and media history to analyze the continued allure of the Winter Olympics, a century after its origin, and in light of the sustained and significant problems facing the Olympic movement. Host cities’ efforts to create positive and lasting legacies are analyzed to highlight the challenges and complexities that have plagued the Olympic movement throughout the last century. The Olympic Winter Games at 100 is essential reading for any researcher, advanced student or scholar with an interest in Olympic Studies, sports development, sport policy and history. The chapters in this book were published as two special issues in The International Journal of the History of Sport.

In 2017 the Olympic Studies Centre of the German Sport University organized a workshop on Sport Development and Olympic Studies. This book resulted from the presentations and discussions they engendered around identifying new international collaborative research fields and deepening research on the Olympics, the Olympic Movement and sport development. The effective application of the hermeneutical method unifies the chapters. The interpretive strengths of this method sharpen the analytical perspective of the chapters, with the strict requirements for the use of primary sources meaning that the contributors have conducted extensive archival research. Assuring thematic coherence, the studies assembled for this book focus on the analysis of processes of continuity, transformation, and development across four areas: sport institutions and their policies; commissions within and policies of governing bodies of sports; legacy discussions; and sport events within the summer and winter Olympic Games transformed into political and cultural spectacles. Bringing together experts in the field, Sport Development and Olympic Studies will be of great use to scholars of Sport Development, Sport History, The Olympics and Sport Sociology. This book was originally published as a special issue of The International Journal of the History of Sport.

Since 1924 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has held the Olympic Winter Games, which are smaller in size than the Summer Games. Usually around 3,000 athletes participate. With the exception of Sapporo in 1972 and Nagano in 1998 the Winter Olympics were predominantly organised in European countries and occasionally in North America. Only since the XXII Olympic Winter Games 2014, have Russia and Asian countries also provided host cities. Whereas at the first Olympic Winter Games five percent of the participating athletes were women, the number has risen over the decades to 45 percent at the last Winter Games in Beijing in 2022. It was a long and not always easy journey for female athletes to gain both entrance and acceptance, as will be shown in chosen cases. The article provides an overview on the foundation, development, changes and major challenges of the Olympic Winter Games as well as the addition of new disciplines. Baron Pierre de Coubertin`s initial resistance and the IOC`s biased position on their implementation are mentioned. Later IOC presidents as well were not always approbative. One reason was the amateur controversy. Since amateurism was one of the main Olympic ideals until the 1980s, the IOC considered it to be threatened, especially due to the commercialisation of skiing and of other winter sports. Each of the twenty-four Olympic Winter Games that have been held until today has its individual history, scandals and highlights in sport but also connected to a number of national and international issues that were not always related only to sports. It is not possible to go into detail of each of the Games; thus, in the following an overview on the Winter Olympics shall be given with chosen examples.

For many years, in addition to events on the official sports programme, an Olympic Games Organising Committee (OCOG) had the choice to include demonstration sports and events. This reference document is designed to trace the evolution of the rules surrounding these demonstration sports and events, present those that were included and highlight some of the more unique choices that were made by the OCOGs.

The 1960 Olympic Winter Games were a long-shot effort that succeeded beyond the wildest expectations. Working in a sparsely populated valley in the Sierra Nevada with only rudimentary facilities, organizers created a world-class Olympic site in four short years. For the only time in Olympic history, the venues and athlete residence halls were located in a compact, intimate setting that encouraged sportsmanship and interaction between athletes. There was elaborate pageantry in the ceremonies and decorations. The underdog American ice hockey team won the first-ever USA gold medal in that sport. American figure skaters swept gold in the individual events. Well-trained Soviet and Scandinavian athletes dominated the speed skating and cross-country skiing events. American women proved their mettle in the Alpine skiing events. German skiers made surprise upsets in the Nordic combined and ski jumping contests. And CBS-TV was there to capture the most exciting moments and make groundbreaking live broadcasts to American audiences.
