The 7th Australian Infantry Brigade at Milne Bay fought the turning point of WW2 in the South Pacific on the 31st August 1942. These ill-trained men found themselves fighting against the well-trained force of Japan, the 3rd and 5th Kure Special Naval Landing Force. It would become known as, The Battle for Milne Bay, fought at Number 3 Strip. Number 3 Strip was located a few miles North-East of Gili Gili at Milne Bay on the southern tip of Papua New Guinea.This battle broke the invincibility of the Japanese Imperial Force, for it was the first time the Japanese had been beaten on land in the South West Pacific Arena. It was from this battle that the Japanese were slowly driven back to Japan.The "Choco's" proved to the AIF that they wouldn't melt under fire and that their blood was just as red as the AIF's.After Milne Bay the 7th Brigade, as part of the 3rd Division, moved to Bougainville to relieve the American Forces and fight the Japanese at Little George Hill, Arty Hill, Pearl Ridge , Barara and Slaters Knoll before the War ended on the 15th August 1945. They finally left Bougainville in December 1945.

This is the History of the 9th Australian Infantry Battalion (Moreton Regiment) during their service in World War Two, defending Australia from a threatening invasion from Japan.This book covers their journey from training at Chermside, their movement to Caloundra in January 1942 where they came under the Command of the 'Brisbane Covering Force Sector', their entrainment to Townsville to defend Australia from a possible attack from Japan, their shipment to Milne Bay in July 1942 to defend the proposed airstrips there, Donadabu, their return to Australia for R & R, Madang, Siar and finally their movement to Bougainville in November 1944 to help rid the Island of Japanese.At Milne Bay the main part of the Battalion were to defend the South side of the Bay from any invasion attempt by the Japanese, the Japanese invaded the North shore and the Battalion's 'C' Company moved forward to the Number 3 Airstrip to support the 25th and 61st Battalions to defend the Strip.In Bougainville the 9th Battalion went into action first, fighting along the Numa Numa Trail at Little George Hill and Artillery Ridge. Later the Battalion moved into the Southern Sector of Bougainville with the rest of the 7th Brigade and fought their way inland to take the track junction at Mosigetta. Their 'B' Echelon fought against overwhelming odds to defend their position at Barara.After the Japanese surrendered in August 1945 the Battalion returned to Australia on the 9th November 1945 and the Battalion was finally disbanded on the 26th November 1945.
