Nobody but the author would have dared to demand that the Chilean military revolution be given the same status as the French or the Russian Revolutions, for their worldly importance, that it deserves, both in socioeconomic matters, in which it pioneered, and even in human rights aspects. For the latter were used against Chile by the USSR and satellites, but finally derived in the main cause of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the iron curtain altogether. Ironically, communist regimes lasted less in time than the Pinochet and the junta government in Chile. The author, in his abundant and sustained writings for half a century in the prominent and traditional newspaper El Mercurio of Santiago, and in the last decade in blogdehermogenes.blogspot.com and his numerous books, has emphasized something that the mainstream media in his country and in the world have neglected: the extra cost imposed to Chile by its defense against the generalized, long, and violent terrorist armed aggression that was financed and promoted by countries such as Cuba, the USSR, and East Germany. This book also emphasizes the surprising fact that the Chilean revolution, which restored both the country's democracy and its economy, had to bear the cost of the Western countries taking sides with its enemies, imposing an extra burden on its defense against totalitarianism.

This book studies the political role of the Chilean military during the years 1808-1826. Beginning with the fall of the Spanish monarchy to Napoleon in 1808 and ending immediately after the last royalist contingents were expelled from the island of Chiloé, it does not seek to give a full picture of the participation of military men on the battlefield but rather to interpret their involvement in local politics. In so doing, this book aims to make a contribution to the understanding of Chile's revolution of independence, as well as to discuss some of the most recent historiographical contributions on the role of the military in the creation of the Chilean republic. Although the focus is placed on the career and participation of Chilean revolutionary officers, this book also provides an overview of both the role of royalist armies and the influence of international events in Chile.

This thesis studies the political role of the Chilean military during the years 1780-1826. Beginning with the last decades of the eighteenth century and ending immediately after the last royalist contingents were expelled from the island of Chiloe, this thesis does not seek to give a full picture of the participation of military men on the battlefield but rather to interpret their involvement in local politics. The main categories deployed in this study are 1) armies, 2) politics and 3) revolution, and the three are presented with the purpose of demonstrating that, as Peggy K. Liss has claimed, after 1810 Spanish American public life 'became militarized; and the military, privileged'. I argue that, notwithstanding the sometimes tense relationship between civilians and the armed forces, the Chilean military became privileged because the demise of the Spanish monarchy in 1808 made them protagonists of the decision-making process. In so -' doing, this thesis aims to make a contribution to the understanding of Chile's revolution of independence, as well as to discuss some recent historiographical contributions on the role of the military in the creation of the Chilean republican system. Although the focus has been placed on the career and participation of Chilean revolutionary officers, this thesis also seeks to provide an overview of both the role of royalist armies and the influence of international events in Chile.
