Church History, Volume One offers a unique contextual view of how the Christian church spread and grew from its development in the days of Jesus to the years leading up to the Reformation. Looking closely at the integral link between the history of the world and that of the church, Church History paints a portrait of God's people within its setting of times, cultures, and events that both influenced and were influenced by the church. FEATURES: Maps, charts, and illustrations spanning the time from the first through the thirteenth centuries. Overviews of the Roman, Greek, and Jewish worlds and how they developed or declined. Insights into the church's relationship to the Roman Empire, with glimpses into pagan attitudes toward Christians. Explanations of the role of art, architecture, literature, and philosophy—both sacred and secular—in the Church. Details on the major theological controversies of the periods. Each chapter also contains callout passages from Scripture to assist in understanding the narrative of the Church, even to the present day, as part of the greater narrative of the Bible. AUTHOR'S PERSPECTIVE: Scholar and writer Everett Ferguson wrote this history of the church from the perspective that such a history is the story of the greatest movement and community the world has known. It's a human story of a divinely called people who wanted to live by a divine revelation. It's a story of how they succeeded and how they failed or fell short of their calling. From the Apostle Paul to the apologists and martyrs of the second century to Martin Luther, the historical figures detailed are people who have struggled with the meaning of the greatest event in history—the coming of the Son of God—and with their role in that event and in the lives of God's people.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1888 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER III. The German Reformation From The Publication Op Luther's Theses To The Diet Of Worms, A.d. 1517-1521. 30. The Sale of Indulgences. St. Peter's Dome is at once the glory and the shame of papal Rome. It was built over the bones of the Galilaean fisherman, with the proceeds from the sale of indulgences which broke up the unity of Western Christendom. The magnificent structure was begun in 1506 under Pope Julius II., and completed in 1026 at a cost of forty-six millions scudi, and is kept up at an annual expense of thirty thousand scudi (dollars).1 Jesus began his public ministry with the expulsion of the profane traffickers from the court of the temple. The Reformation began with a protest against the traffic in indulgences which profaned and degraded the Christian religion. The difficult and complicated doctrine of indulgences is peculiar to the Roman Church. It was unknown to the Greek and Latin fathers. It was developed by the medireval schoolmen, and sanctioned by the Council of Trent (Dec. 4, 153), yet without a definition and with an express warning against abuses and evil gains.2 1 On St. Peter's church, see the archaeological and historical works on Rome, and especially Heinr. von Geymiillcr, Die Entwiirfe fur Sanct Peter in Rom, Wien (German and French); and Charles de Lorbac, Saint-Pierre de Home, Ulustri de plus de ISO gramires siir bois, Rome, 1879 (pp. 310). 2 The Council incidentally admits that these evil gains have been the most prolific source of abuses, -- "unde plurima in Christiana poptdo abmniim causa fluxit,"--and hence it ordained that they are to be wholly abolished: "omnino abolendos esse." (Schaff, Creeds of Christendom, II. 205 sq.) A strong proof of the effect of the Reformation upon...
