History of the Lombards, by Paul the Deacon (c. 720-c. 799), is among the most important and oldest accounts of the Germanic nation. The book preserves many ancient myths and popular traditions and draws from sources that are now lost. The history traces the changing fortunes of the Lombards, the last of the migratory Germanic peoples to enter the western part of the old Roman Empire, from their first appearance in the West in the sixth century to the middle of the eighth century. The popularity of Paul the Deacon's book has endured over the centuries and, although there have been numerous translations and editions, this remains the only one in English.

A historical book, written in Latin by Paolo Diacono in the eighth century after Christ, tells the story of the Lombard people who left Scandinavia to reach Italy and reign there for over two centuries. Today, Milan is the capital of that region which bears the name of Lombardy, the land of the Lombards. The story is interesting even if the conquest Franca takes away the taste of the happy ending. On TV and fantasy there are stories that seem drawn from the events of this people, the life of Grimoaldo, King of the Lombards is worth a novel on its own It starts with the departure from Scandinavia and the legend of the name. Then follows a story of the long march towards Italy. A brief digression on San Benedetto with two unimportant poems, then the arrival of Italy, the description of the peninsula, Alboino, his exploits, Rosmunda and Elmiche who kill Alboino. The ten years of anarchy of the dukes, Autari and Teodolinda Catholic princess of the Bavari, Astolfo, second husband of Teodolinda, Rotari the King of the Edict and the first body of Lombard laws, after Roman law a first example of organic legislation, very important for the future history of legal law. This is followed by Grimoaldo's extraordinary adventure with the escape from captivity, intrigue, the Duchy of Bemevento and the conquest of the throne. Then Grimoaldosc defeats Franks and Byzantines, deceives the Avars .... Then go from king to king until the other human event, that of Liutprando and his family. A compelling and evocative story useful to understand today's Italian divided between north and south. Translator: Fatima Immacolata Pretta PUBLISHER: TEKTIME

Why is a region in northern Italy called Lombardy? It was named after the Germanic barbarians known as the Lombards. As one of several founding ethnic groups, they left their mark on the peninsula. They established dukedoms that set the country on a path to the formation of many independent city-states during the Late Middle Ages. Previously a nomadic people, who, according to legend, came from Scandinavia, the Lombards settled first in northern Italy or what is today called Lombardy and then later expanded their kingdom to encompass most of Italy, from the Alps to Mezzogiorno, or southern Italy. The Lombards, living up to their designation as barbarians by the Romans, were a warlike people. The chronicle of their history is one of battles against other barbarian tribes, the Romans, the Byzantines, Muslims, and the pope and his army. The Lombards were finally removed from power by the overwhelming forces of Charlemagne in northern Italy and the Normans in the south. From time to time, the Lombards fought enemies on all fronts. But their most intriguing struggles were against each other. Claimants to the throne and regional dukes continuously vied for power. They were invariably duplicitous in negotiations and sought allies wherever they could find them. The Lombard duchies were conquered one after another by foreign invaders, and their culture and language gradually disappeared, being absorbed into the matrix of cultures that subsequently came to dominate Italy. In this book, you will learn: The route the nomadic Lombards followed as they migrated from northern Germany to Italy. How the Lombards eventually turned against the Romans who invited them to settle in Italy. How the first Lombard king in Italy was murdered in 572 CE by his wife as revenge for the murder of her father. Why the Lombards reinstituted their kingship after ten years of managing without a king. The intricacies of Lombard strategic alliances that allowed them to expand their kingdom from the north of Italy to the southern tip of the Italian Peninsula. Why the Lombards gradually abandoned a heretical Christian sect and adopted orthodox Catholicism. The role played by a traveling Irish monk who established monasteries in Lombardy. How the chronicler of the Lombards, Paul the Deacon, came to write the history of his people. What the Lombard laws tell us about the people's culture. How the Lombard rule in northern Italy collapsed before Charlemagne's army and the Normans' success in ending Lombard rule in southern Italy. The Little History Of The Lombards Of Benevento By Erchempert written by Luigi Andrea Berto and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-19 with History categories.

This volume presents the analysis, English translation, and critical edition of the Latin text of The Little History of the Lombards of Benevento, thus offering an important contribution for a better understanding of early medieval southern Italian (and Mediterranean) history. In the 840s, having passed the danger of subjugation by Charlemagne, southern Italy’s Lombards experienced a bloody civil war that put an end to their unity and turned southern Italy into the playground of several competing powers: Lombard lords, the Neapolitans, the Frankish and the Byzantine Empires, the Muslims, and, sometimes, even the papacy. At the end of the ninth century, the Cassinese monk Erchempert composed a chronicle about this period that blamed the southern Lombard leaders for the terrible crisis of southern Italy. It was Erchempert’s desire that future generations could learn from the folly of their forbearers, and his chronicle has since become the most relevant source for southern Italy between the 770s and the 880s. The book will appeal to scholars and students of chronicles, Lombards, Franks, Byzantines, and Muslims in early medieval Italy, as well as all those interested in medieval Europe.
