The History of the Sheyenne Valley Grazing Association of McLeod, North Dakota describes the background and development of this community organization in the Sheyenne River delta of southeastern North Dakota: "a unique ecology in the Western hemisphere," (Audubon Society). The book surveys the fascinating prehistory of the area; and the development of a Grazing Association cooperative which began in 1941 and continues to the present. This Association began with a set of communitarian values, with a unique and complex management system for the local grassland ecologies. This management has been shared with various U.S. Department of Agriculture agencies over the years. This history places each decade of the Association's development within the context of events in U.S. society and reveals insights gained by working through the social and environmental effects of the droughts of the 1930s and the ups and downs and radical administrative changes of the Soil Conservation Service and U.S. Forest Service. The social values and management system suggest models which support a vibrant community life, and communities' economic and environmental health. Interviews with founding and senior members of the association emphasize the policy of stewardship of the environment, animals and people, and that this approach to life is "a sacred trust" that needs to be passed down to following generations.

This community Cooperative Association grazes cattle, goats and sheep on the Sheyenne Valley Grasslands in southeastern North Dakota, and has remained a central feature of the local economy for over 80 years. This group, along with the Soil Conservation Service and the US Forest Service has, from its beginning, used unique community-based approaches to stewardship of the 70,000+ acres of the Sheyenne Valley Grasslands, part of the Dakota Prairie Grasslands, which is administered by the U.S. Forest Service, USDA. Alice Maung-Mercurio follows the amazing story from the time this land was covered by Lake Agassiz, the hundreds of years of native American tribal life and then white settlement, the local effects of the radical land use turnover of the Resettlement Program during the 1930s drought years, and the community's complex relationships with federal government agencies and local conservation groups since the 1940s. Stories from senior members and elders of the Grazing Association about this community and the long-standing heritage of knowledge of local land, water, animals and plants through all seasons, climate and weather patterns.

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing. house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 25 (thesis year 1980) a total of 10,308 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 214 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 25 reports theses submitted in 1980, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
