Complaint was made at the Evangelical Diet, July, 1729, against him that he intended topublish a new edition of the New Testament that inclined to Socinianism. In October, 1729, the Basle authorities ordered his room to be searched for the manuscript, but they found nothing. By February he gave them part of it--up to Matthew 2: 12. On May 13, 1730, the council, in spite of the protest of his congregation, dismissed him from office. Viewed from the standpoint of to-day, the trial was, in many ways, unworthy of so great a man in what is now granted by criticism, yet he laid himself open by careless actions to charges against his orthodoxy. He left Basle for Amsterdam. There a new field was opening for him in 1731. Professor Clericus, of the Remonstrant or Arminian Theological Seminary there, was retired, and Wettstein was offered his place, but on condition that he would clear himself of the charge of heresy. So he went back to Basle (1731) to get a clear dismissal. There he defended himself before both councils, and was readmitted to its ministry, March 22, 1732. By this time the pastors had withdrawn their opposition, and only Professors Frey and Iselin were his.enemies. He wanted to be made professor of Hebrew, but the continued opposition of Frey and Iselin made it impossible. The council also recalled the permission to preach given in 1732. So he left Basle, went to Amsterdam, and, in 1736, was elected the successor of Le Clerc or Clericus. In 174.4, as most of his old enemies had died and the opposition to him passed away, Basle elected him professor of Greek. But the Remonstrants in Holland had been so kind to him that he declined it and remained with them. In 1745, when he revisited Basle to see his aged...

Excerpt from The Reformed Reformation This work has been published to meet a desire by some of the ministers of the Reformed Church for more material on the Reformed side of the Reformation, which they might use in the observance of the Quarto-centenary of the Reforma tion. We therefore give less space to the Lutheran side of the Reformation; especially as the material on that side of the Reformation is more abundant, and besides the Lutherans, to their credit be it said, have been exploiting Luther more than the Reformed have been doing for Zwingli or Calvin. Where we have treated of both sides of the Reformation, we have tried to give the Lutheran side fairly, but we have given the facts as they stand today. We have no desire to mini mize Luther, but to give him all due credit for the greatness of his work. But Luther is not the whole of the Reformation and the Reformed should receive their fair recognition. We have also endeavored to utilize the latest discoveries in the history of the Reformation and also the latest publications of, and on, that period. This has placed somethings in a new light. The Reformed and Presbyterian Churches are especially interested in all this, as they have come directly from Zwingli through Calvin. And we trust that they will find this work helpful for the observance of this Anniversary. We only regret the shortness of time that we have had, in which to prepare it so as to get it out before 1917. And we regret our inability, on account of the war, to get to Zurich so as to get hold of more of the original sources, though our own large library on the Reformed Church of Switzerland has given much. That this book may have a share, however small, in making this Anniversary a great inspiration and blessing to our Churches is the wish of the author. Recently scholars have become increasingly aware of Zurich's role as an intellectual and cultural centre of the European Reformation. This study focuses on a little-known aspect of the Zurich church's international activity: its relationship with Italian-speaking evangelicals during the period 1540-1620. The work assesses the importance of Zwinglian influences within the early Italian evangelical movement and Zurich's contribution to the spread of the Reformation in Italian-speaking territories such as Locarno and southern Graubünden. It shows how, following the establishment of the Roman Inquisition in July 1542, senior Zurich churchmen emerged as important points of contact for Italian reformers in exile. A central concern of the study is the threat to the integrity of the Zwinglian settlement posed by religious radicals within the Italian exile community. Although the radicals were relatively few in number, their activities had a profound influence on the way in which the community as a whole came to be perceived by the Swiss and other Reformed churches. In Zurich, the turning point was a series of doctrinal disputes during the mid-sixteenth century, which culminated in the dissolution of the city's Italian church in November 1563. The alliance forged in the course of those disputes between the leadership of the Zurich church and theologically conservative Italian exiles became the basis for close co-operation in subsequent decades. Drawing heavily on unpublished sources from Swiss archives, the volume sheds light on the processes by which the boundaries of Reformed orthodoxy came to be defined. In particular, it demonstrates the importance of theological controversy and polemic as catalysts for the systematisation of doctrine during this period.
