Excerpt from History of the Welsh Guards It is the lot of few regiments, as it is of few great men or women, to have the story of their birth and early years written by a contemporary hand. We all know how difficult it is to prove events even within our own times, and therefore the nearer we get to them the more unlikely it is that they recede into the realm of fiction. The Welsh Guards have this advantage, and, seeing that their inception took place during a great war, it is all the more important that their advent should be set down clearly and by one who was present. I had the advantage of being present and assisting at the birth, and no one can be better qualified than Major C. H. Dudley Ward, D.S.O., M.C., to carry on the story with its bapteme de feu and glorious exploits in the subsequent years of war. It had been the unanimous wish of the Welsh people - than whom none are more noted for their loyalty to the Crown - that the Principality should take its place among the nations of the British Isles in finding a regiment to assist in guarding the Throne. King George V gave expression to this sentiment, and to his own wishes, on February 6th, 1915, by commanding Field-Marshal Earl Kitchener, K.G., then Secretary of State for War, to put His Majesty's orders into execution. Accordingly, as I was commanding the London District, I was sent for by the Field-Marshal and ordered to raise a battalion immediately. On my asking Lord Kitchener how soon he expected this to be done, he replied, in his usual abrupt manner: "In a week!" My answer was: "They shall go on guard on St. David's Day" - and they Did! Excerpt from The Origin and History of the First or Grenadier Guards, Vol. 1 of 3: From Documents in the State Paper Office, War Office, Horse Guards, Contemporary History, Regimental Records, Etc A Circular was issued by the General Commanding-in-Chief, on the 29th of August, 1830, directing by command of the King that the Historical Records of all Regiments should be forthwith prepared for publication, and there shortly appeared in rapid succession a series of records of many Regiments of the Line, both Cavalry and Infantry, as well as of the Household Cavalry, compiled by authority in the Adjutant-General's offence, but the records so prepared did not include those of the Brigade of Guards; Colonel Mackinnon of the Coldstreams therefore wrote and published in the year 1833, the "Origin and History" of his Regiment, but no officer at that time undertook to compile the History of the Grenadier Guards. I had then but recently joined the Regiment, and from the year 1836 to 1846 was too continuously employed in the active duties of Adjutant of one of its Battalions to undertake the literary researches that would be necessary to do justice to such a subject. Shortly after this latter period, I conceived the idea of endeavouring myself to collect the requisite materials. Several events, however, tended to delay the completion of my design. The destruction of the British Expeditionary Force in 1914 called for new regiments to be formed. The Welsh Guards was one of these regiments. On 26 February 1915, King George V approved the creation of a Welsh Regiment of Foot Guards. Within a month, the Company Colours and their uniform details were settled. They immediately began training. In August, 1915, the Welsh Guards sailed to France to fight on the Western Front. Times were hard and the regiment's first test was the Battle of Loos: the first major action of the war to use the new Kitchener's men. Captain Dudley Ward served in the Welsh Regiment.
