Old Hampshire County, extending originally from the uncertain East ern line of New York on the West, into the present territory of Wor cester County, on the East, and occupying, throughout that distance, the entire width of the Massachusetts patent, was, at first, in almost everything but the name, a colony of itself. The settlements were planted in the wilderness, and the waste of woods that lay between them and the seat of authority of the Massachusetts Bay, was hardly less to be dreaded, or easier of passage, than the waste of waters' that interposed between the Bay and the Mother Country. Its interests have been developed by themselves. Its institutions, habits and cus toms have sprung out of its own peculiar wants, circumstances and spirit, and the history of Western Massachusetts is but the history of the old mother county and her children. Excerpt from History of Western Massachusetts, Vol. 3 of 2: The Counties of Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin, and Berkshire, Embracing an Outline, or General History, of the Section, and Account of Its Scientific Aspects and Leading Interests, and Separate Histories of Its One Hundred Towns The town during its early history was known by the name of New Glasgow, but it took the name of Blandford at its incorporation, April 10, 1741. The name was con ferred by Gov. Shirley who had, a short time before, ar rived in the'province, in a ship bearing the name of Bland ford. The town was a frontier town, was less prosperous in consequence of that fact, and received many favors from the General Court. Fortybushels of' salt was among the benefactions of the State. In common with other towns in the vicinity, it suffered to some extent from the hostilities 'of the Indians, in the French and Indian wars. Blandford was the locality of an important fort, erected and sustained 'by the Government. While the town furnished its quota of men to fight the battles of our Revolution, and paid its taxes, there'were several citizens who boldly proclaimed their adhesion to the king, and who wore, in consequence, forbidden by the Committee of Safe ty to pass beyond their farms. The town was a great thoroughfare for the passage of stores Westward during the war, and it is said that the roads were so bad, at that time, that it took twenty yoke of oxen and eighty men to convey a mortar over the bills to West Point. The pris oners who were' taken at the battle of Bennington, or, rather, a part of them, passed through Blandford on their way to Boston, an'd, while in the town, were driven into quarters by 'a severe snow storm.
