Salem, King James VI, Malleus Maleficarum. The world of witch hunts and witch trials sounds antiquated, relics of an unenlightened and brutal age. However, 'witch hunt' is heard often in the present-day media, and the misogyny it is rooted in is all too familiar today. A woman was prosecuted under the 1735 Witchcraft Act as recently as 1944. This book uses thirteen significant trials to explore the history of witchcraft and witch hunts. As well as investigating some of the most famous trials from the middle ages to the 18th century, it takes us in new and surprising directions. It shows us how witchcraft was decriminalised in the 18th century, only to be reimagined by the 1780s Romantic radicals. We will learn how it evolved from being seen as a threat to Christianity to perceived as gendered persecution, and how trials against chieftains in Africa stoked anger against colonial rule. Significantly, the book tells the stories of the victims - women, such as Helena Scheuberin and Joan Wright - whose stories have too often been overshadowed by those of the powerful men, such as King James VI and I and “Witchfinder General” Matthew Hopkins, who hounded them. While this will be a history of witchcraft, the subject cannot be consigned to the history books. Hundreds of people, mostly women, are tried and killed as witches every year in Africa. ‘WITCH HUNT!’ is as common in our language today as ever it was, and witches are still on trial across the world.

Augustus Montague Summers (1880 – 1948) was an English clergyman and author most famous for his studies on vampires, witches and werewolves—all of which he believed to be very much real. He also wrote the first English translation of the infamous 15th-century witch hunter's manual, the “Malleus Maleficarum”, in 1928. Contents include: “Of the Practice and Profession of Witchcraft; of the Contact; and the Familiar”, “Of the Practice of Witchcraft; of the Malice and Mischief of Witches; of the Devi's Mark; and of the Grimore”, “Of the Witch Covens and their Grand Masters; of their Journey to the Sabbat; and of the Sabbat Orgy”, etc. Other notable works by this author include: “Witchcraft and Black Magic” (1946) and “The Physical Phenomena of Mysticism” (1947). "It turns out a sixteen-year-old being one of the most powerful witches on Earth puts people on edge... You cast one dubious spell and everything goes to shit. Namely, the Amazons, the most powerful coven of witches, have come to Ember Academy to investigate everything that happened on Halloween. And my role in it. They know that I'm powerful, but I'm not sure what they would do if they knew why, so I'm keeping quiet. Of course, that mean that they don't trust me, so they're forcing me through their trials. If I pass, I'll be an Amazon, and they'll trust me with my powers and secrets. If I dont... well, the fact that no one's being explicit about that tells me that I don't want to know. My survival depends on passing these trials, but they're meant to determine the best of the best, and I've known about magic for less than two months" -- Cover, page 4.
