History Texts And Art In Early Babylonia written by Piotr Steinkeller and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Art, Assyro-Babylonian categories.

These essays represent a summation of Piotr Steinkeller's decades-long thinking and writing about the history of third millennium BCE Babylonia and the ways in which it is reflected in ancient historical and literary sources and art, as well as of how these written and visual materials may be used by the modern historian to attain, if not a reliable record of histoire événementielle, a comprehensive picture of how the ancients understood their history. The book focuses on the history of early Babylonian kingship, as it evolved over a period from Late Uruk down to Old Babylonian times, and the impact of the concepts of kingship on contemporaneous history writing and visual art. Here comparisons are drawn between Babylonia and similar developments in ancient Egypt, China and Mesoamerica. Other issues treated is the intersection between history writing and the scholarly, lexical, and literary traditions in early Babylonia; and the question of how the modern historian should approach the study of ancient sources of "historical" nature. Such a broad and comprehensive overview is novel in Mesopotamian studies to date. As such, it should contribute to an improved and more nuanced understanding of early Babylonian history.

Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Early Babylonia: A Dissertation Presented to the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Leipzig to Obtain the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The Bibliography makes no claim to completeness, but is intended merely to point the way to materials for other students, who desire to test some of the results. It was written at a long distance from my own library and some of the smaller articles are therefore wanting. There are many marks of haste in this little work, but its writing had thus to be done and apology is sincerely made for any injustice to any worker thereby caused. Excerpt from The History of Babylonia Mr. George Smith left his "History of Babylonia" in so nearly complete a state, that an editor had little more to do than to see it through the press, correct one or two errors, and make a few additions. In the performance of this work, which has been one of mingled pain and pleasure, I have changed the author's words and spelling only where there was an obvious oversight, throwing other corrections into footnotes. My own responsibility for these, as well as for other footnotes containing additions to the text, is indicated by a capital S. I have also to take upon myself the responsibility of the Appendix upon the meaning of the proper names, as well as of the table of Babylonian kings and the larger part of the first introductory chapter, of which only the first page or two were written by Mr. Smith. Brackets mark the inserted portion. The Index is due to the kindness of Mr. Greenwood Hird. Two expressions which will be met with in the book need a short explanation. II of the series) a short account is given Of the chief problems which are raised or solved by the new texts, and further reference to them here is therefore needless. For a full discussion of the information supplied by the new chronicles the reader is referred to the introductory chapters printed in that volume, which deal, approxi mately in chronological order, with the events recorded in the texts. In the Index to registration-numbers at the end Of the present volume references are given to the chapters in which the different chronicles and other compositions here published are discussed.
