The books are not about Black history, neither are they simply for the Black community to celebrate during Black History Month. "History Through the Black Experience" aims to be read by all groups sharing, learning and knowing about our past and present. All communities wish to stand tall on the world's stage. All groups wish to be seen, heard and understood. The Black community has a rich and varied past that informs and shapes our present and guides our future. It is a past that did not happen in isolation, as suggested by 'Black History'. The experiences were shared by the wider diverse communities, beyond one ethnic or cultural group. The Black body of work was affected by others and affected others becoming just one strand in the greater web of life. This is not Black history. This is our history, a history we all share.

African Americans from Pittsburgh have a long and distinctive history of contributions to the cultural, political, and social evolution of the United States. From jazz legend Earl Fatha Hines to playwright August Wilson, from labor protests in the 1950s to the Black Power movement of the late 1960s, Pittsburgh has been a force for change in American race and class relations. Race and Renaissance presents the first history of African American life in Pittsburgh after World War II.
