Le 12 octobre 1933, Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1908-1942) monte à bord de l'Orient-Express en gare de Genève. Deux semaines plus tard en Suisse alémanique, la Zürcher Illustrierte annonce que la " journaliste photographe " se trouve au Proche-Orient avec un groupe d'archéologues pour un périple de six mois à travers la Turquie, la Syrie, la Palestine, l'Irak et la Perse. En avril elle a lancé le concept d'une revue antifasciste, dont Klaus Mann a pris la direction, mais elle s'est sentie incapable de demeurer sous le " nuage noir " qui commence à empoisonner l'Europe depuis l'arrivée d'Hitler au pouvoir. Si elle choisit la fuite, celle-ci devra donner une orientation constructive à sa vie; aussi la voyageuse va-t-elle s'attacher aux réalités des pays traversés, aux rencontres avec les autochtones, aux visites de chantiers de fouilles. Dans le même temps, ce premier contact avec l'Orient est une " plongée dans l'intemporel et l'incertain ". Au cours de périples ultérieurs, ces contrées deviendront pour Annemarie le symbole de l'égarement existentiel de l'être humain.

Cet ouvrage se propose de combler un vide : l’absence de toute publication de synthèse récente, en français, sur la géographie physique du Moyen-Orient arabe. Sa situation exceptionnelle à la charnière de trois continents, et en isthme entre la Méditerranée, la mer Rouge et le golfe Persique et, d’autre part, l’existence d’immenses ressources pétrolières, ont donné au Moyen-Orient arabe une très grande importance géopolitique. La région connaît aujourd’hui des transformations considérables. Toutefois, le Moyen-Orient est fortement marqué par l’aridité, en Arabie et plus encore en Égypte, dont la plus grande partie est hyperaride, tandis que, dans le Nord, le Croissant fertile bénéficie d’un climat méditerranéen à forte sécheresse estivale. Malgré la présence de grands fleuves exogènes, et d’importants aquifères fossiles, les ressources en eau sont réduites et très mal réparties. Les hommes ont donc dû, très tôt, élaborer des techniques ingénieuses de maîtrise de l’eau, mais l’augmentation rapide des besoins a nécessité la multiplication de barrages et pompages. L’augmentation rapide des besoins a amené les hommes à multiplier barrages et pompages et a beaucoup exiger des rivières et des aquifères si bien que épuisement et pénurie menacent aujourd’hui gravement la plupart des pays. L’histoire géologique, retracée, permet de mieux comprendre à la fois l’évolution et les potentialités de la région. De même, l’histoire des paléoenvironnements, en particulier depuis le dernier maximum glaciaire, est présentée et mise en relation avec l’évolution des sociétés humaines, notamment lors de la révolution néolithique. La longue occupation humaine, comme les techniques actuelles d’exploitation intensive, marquent profondément les paysages.
