Character. Excellence. A love for the game. Sportsmanship. These were the qualities that Hobart (Hobey) Baker demonstrated as a legendary amateur athlete in the early twentieth century. Through his gentlemanly play and unmatched skill, Baker set new standards for how ice hockey was played while starring at Princeton University in the four years preceding the start of World War I. Baker then became a decorated fighter pilot during the Great War before he died tragically in late 1918 when a repaired aircraft he was testing crashed into the French countryside. Baker's legend, however, did not die. Since 1981, the Hobey Baker Memorial Award has been presented to the U.S. college hockey player best displaying the virtues Baker embodied during his lifetime. Past winners of the Hobey Baker Memorial Award include five members of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, five Stanley Cup champions, two Olympic gold medalists, and an inductee to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. In Hobey Baker Memorial Award: The First 40, author Brian W. Shaughnessy, in conjunction with the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation, chronicles the careers of the forty winners of American college hockey's most prestigious honor.

He was America's most dashing athlete, the pride of Princeton. Hobey Baker, the aristocratic Ivy League sports hero and, later, a glamorous World War I fighter pilot. From the outside, U.S. Army Captain Hobey Baker had it all: good looks, a glamorous fiancé, war medals for bravery, and a sports resume second to none. And then it all came crashing down, barely a month following the Armistice. Over the years, questions emerged: Why did Baker take that ill-fated flight in the first place? What prompted his lover to abandon him? Why did he fight his orders to return home from war? Hobey Baker, Upon Further Review distills a century's worth of clues to solve the mystery of a death that has confounded us all.

Mark Bernstein shows that much of the culture that surrounds American football, both good and bad, has its roots in the Ivy League. With their long winning streaks, distinctive traditions, and impressive victories, Ivy teams started a national obsession with football in the first decades of the twentieth century that remains alive today. In so doing they have helped develop our ideals about the role of athletics in college life.

War Bird Ace written by Jack Stokes Ballard and has been published by Texas A&M University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-02-06 with History categories.

Capt. Field E. Kindley, with the famous Eddie Rickenbacker, was one of America’s foremost World War I flying aces. Like Rickenbacker’s, Kindley’s story is one of fierce dogfights, daring aerial feats, and numerous brushes with death. Yet unlike Rickenbacker’s, Kindley’s story has not been fully told until now. Field Kindley gained experience with the RAF before providing leadership for the U.S. Air Service. Kindley was the fourth-ranking American air ace; his exploits earned him a Distinguished Service Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster from the United States and a Distinguished Flying Cross from the British government. In February 1920, during a practice drill Kindley led, some enlisted men unwittingly entered the bombing target area. “Buzzing” the troops to warn them off the field, Kindley somehow lost control of his plane and died in the ensuing crash. Using arduously gathered primary materials and accounts of Great War aces, Jack Ballard tells the story of this little-known hero from the glory days of aerial warfare. Through this tale, an era and a daring flyer live again.
