Paper Leaves in the Wind is a reckoning with Colombia's violent past. The setting for each poem varies from the intimate surroundings of home pierced by fear to foreign countries visited during forced exiles, to the streets of Colombia to the inner workings of the female heart that loves and grieves. The collection is both a feminist and nationalist manifesto. And it is equally a poetic and political act. Likewise, to read the book is to take a literary and artistic journey through the intertextuality of Emily Dickinson to Edgar Allen Poe to the depths of Van Gogh's blue eyes or the beauty of the Duse resting captured by Franz von Lenbach. It has a soundtrack of the Beatles and carillon bells with a theoretical backdrop of Marx. Literary and historical heroines like Antigone and Manuela Sáenz appear in the collection who highlight the importance of the role of women and counterbalance the influence of male figures like Pizarro and Simón Bolívar who are also named in the verses. Ariza's poetry weaves together all of these influences with the histories of fallen comrades during the genocide of the Colombian Patriotic Union. (Jennifer Rathbun - Translator's Note)

Literary Nonfiction. Poetry. Latinx Studies. LGBTQIA Studies. Edited by Ricardo F. Vivancos-Pèrez and Norma Cantú. Rooted in Gloria Anzaldúa's experiences growing up near the U.S./Mexico border, BORDERLANDS/LA FRONTERA remaps our understanding of borders as psychic, social, and cultural terrains that we inhabit and that inhabit us all. Drawing heavily on archival research and a comprehensive literature review while contextualizing the book within her theories and writings before and after its 1987 publication, this critical edition elucidates Anzaldúa's complex composition process and its centrality in the development of her philosophy. It opens with two introductory studies; offers a corrected text, explanatory footnotes, translations, and four archival appendices; and closes with an updated bibliography of Anzaldúa's works, an extensive scholarly bibliography on Borderlands, a brief biography, and a short discussion of the Gloria E. Anzaldúa Papers. "Ricardo F. Vivancos-Pèrez's meticulous archival work and Norma Elia Cantú's life experience and expertise converge to offer a stunning resource for Anzaldúa scholars; for writers, artists, and activists inspired by her work; and for everyone. Hereafter, no study of Borderlands will be complete without this beautiful, essential reference."--Paola Bacchetta

Spanish Poetry Of The Twentieth Century written by Andrew Debicki and has been published by University Press of Kentucky this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-14 with Poetry categories.

Twentieth-century Spanish poetry has received comparatively little attention from critics writing in English. Andrew Debicki now presents the first English-language history published in the United States to examine the sweep of modern Spanish verse. More important, he is the first to situate Spanish poetry in the context of European modernity, to trace its trajectory from the symbolists to the postmodernists. Avoiding the rigid generational schemes and catalogs of names found in traditional Hispanic literary histories, Debicki offers detailed discussions of salient books and texts to construct an original and compelling view of his subject. He demonstrates that contemporary Spanish verse is rooted in the modem tradition and poetics that see the text as a unique embodiment of complex experiences. He then traces the evolution of that tradition in the early decades of the century and its gradual disintegration from the 1950s to the present as Spanish poetry came to reflect features of the postmodern, especially the poetics of text as process rather than as product. By centering his study on major periods and examining within each the work of poets of different ages, Debicki develops novel perspectives. The late 1960s and early 1970s, for example, were not merely the setting for a new aestheticist generation but an era of exceptional creativity in which both established and new writers engendered a profound, intertextual, and often self-referential lyricism. This book will be essential reading for specialists in modern Spanish letters, for advanced students, and for readers inter-ested in comparative literature.

One of the BBC's '100 Novels That Shaped Our World' A gorgeous clothbound edition of Jean Rhys's great masterpiece of desire and madness in the Caribbean, published for the novel's fiftieth anniversary. Born into the oppressive, colonialist society of 1930s Jamaica, white Creole heiress Antoinette Cosway meets a young Englishman who is drawn to her innocent beauty and sensuality. After their marriage, however, disturbing rumours begin to circulate which poison her husband against her. Caught between his demands and her own precarious sense of belonging, Antoinette is inexorably driven towards madness, and her husband into the arms of another novel's heroine. This classic study of betrayal, a seminal work of postcolonial literature, is Jean Rhys's brief, beautiful masterpiece. 'She took one of the works of genius of the nineteenth century and turned it inside-out to create one of the works of genius of the twentieth century' Michele Roberts, The Times

The Soil Will Save Us written by Kristin Ohlson and has been published by Rodale this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-18 with Science categories.

Thousands of years of poor farming and ranching practices—and, especially, modern industrial agriculture—have led to the loss of up to 80 percent of carbon from the world’s soils. That carbon is now floating in the atmosphere, and even if we stopped using fossil fuels today, it would continue warming the planet. In The Soil Will Save Us, journalist and bestselling author Kristin Ohlson makes an elegantly argued, passionate case for "our great green hope"—a way in which we can not only heal the land but also turn atmospheric carbon into beneficial soil carbon—and potentially reverse global warming. As the granddaughter of farmers and the daughter of avid gardeners, Ohlson has long had an appreciation for the soil. A chance conversation with a local chef led her to the crossroads of science, farming, food, and environmentalism and the discovery of the only significant way to remove carbon dioxide from the air—an ecological approach that tends not only to plants and animals but also to the vast population of underground microorganisms that fix carbon in the soil. Ohlson introduces the visionaries—scientists, farmers, ranchers, and landscapers—who are figuring out in the lab and on the ground how to build healthy soil, which solves myriad problems: drought, erosion, air and water pollution, and food quality, as well as climate change. Her discoveries and vivid storytelling will revolutionize the way we think about our food, our landscapes, our plants, and our relationship to Earth.

The Translation judges for the National Book Awards--Richard Miller, Alastair Reid, Eliot Weinberger--cited Clayton Eshleman and Jose Rubia Barcia's translation of Cesar Vallejo's The Complete Posthumous Poetry as follows: "This, the first National Book Award to be given to a translation of modern poetry, is a recognition of Clayton Eshleman's seventeen-year apprenticeship to perhaps the most difficult poetry in the Spanish language. Eshleman and his present collaborator, Jose Rubia Barcia, have not only rendered these complex poems into brilliant and living English, but have also established a definitive Spanish test based on Vallejo's densely rewritten manuscripts. In recreating this modern master in English, they have also made a considerable addition to poetry in our language."

Como luz de río / Like River Light brings together two bilingual poetry collections by one of the most accomplished trans-border poets in America, Juan Armando Rojas Joo. Light / Luz (2013), and Vertebral River / Río vertebral (2009, 2002), masterfully translated by Jennifer Rathbun, this volume also includes a commentary by Julio Ortega. María Ángeles Pérez López (Poeta y profesora en la Universidad de Salamanca) In the poetry of Juan Armando Rojas Joo, the desert is a scar and also an estuary. Two voices name it as a border space, a sanctuary of memory and language: that of a chronicler of the Indies and that of who belongs to that mythical and mobile territory. In this song to the desert, the poems, translated by Jennifer Rathbun, sail on dunes. María Ángeles Pérez López (Poet and Professor at University of Salamanca, Spain) La traducción de Jennifer Rathbun de la poesía de Rojas "construye un puente luminoso a través de la frontera entre EE. UU. Y México, donde no solo se desvanecen las esperanzas, sino que se tuerce la lengua ... La poesía impresionista de Juan Armando Rojas Joo es una lección de artesanía". Ilan Stavans (Ensayista y professor en Amherst College) Jennifer Rathbun's translation of Rojas' poetry "builds a luminous bridge across the U.S.-Mexican border, where not only hopes are dashed but the tongue is twisted... Juan Armando Rojas Joo's impressionistic poetry is a lesson in craftsmanship." Ilan Stavans (Essayist and Professor at Amherst College)

"Nineteen Eighty-Four: A Novel", often published as "1984", is a dystopian social science fiction novel by English novelist George Orwell. It was published on 8 June 1949 by Secker & Warburg as Orwell's ninth and final book completed in his lifetime. Thematically, "Nineteen Eighty-Four" centres on the consequences of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and repressive regimentation of persons and behaviours within society. Orwell, himself a democratic socialist, modelled the authoritarian government in the novel after Stalinist Russia. More broadly, the novel examines the role of truth and facts within politics and the ways in which they are manipulated. The story takes place in an imagined future, the year 1984, when much of the world has fallen victim to perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, historical negationism, and propaganda. Great Britain, known as Airstrip One, has become a province of a totalitarian superstate named Oceania that is ruled by the Party who employ the Thought Police to persecute individuality and independent thinking. Big Brother, the leader of the Party, enjoys an intense cult of personality despite the fact that he may not even exist. The protagonist, Winston Smith, is a diligent and skillful rank-and-file worker and Outer Party member who secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebellion. He enters into a forbidden relationship with a colleague, Julia, and starts to remember what life was like before the Party came to power.

Poetry. Asian & Asian American Studies. African & African American Studies. Latinx Studies. Translated by Jennifer Rathbun. BLUE WINDOW (VENTANA AZUL) captures modern love in all of its contradictory emotions, expressed online, face to face, and in memory. The poems speak to all of our love entanglements and any reader can identify with the love and loss poured into these pages. Acclaimed Chilean poet laureate Ra√∫l Zurita says: "Indran Amirthanayagam, as an immigrant of the language, has not only rendered that language a magisterial book, BLUE WINDOW, but also a poem, 'Illusion,' that is amongst the most moving love poems in the history of Spanish." In these times of the pandemic, where all over the world we have developed a new relationship to the window, among windows, on a Zoom screen with Cyrano moved from the street outside to every windowsill, wherever the internet has travelled, on fiber optic cables set deep into the oceans, on internet balloons flying over large swatches of jungle and brush, bringing people the world over to hear poems of love and loss and love renewed, we give you BLUE WINDOW (VENTANA AZUL). "In our time, it's rare to find poets still writing about the glory of romantic love. A noble tradition, from Sappho to Neruda, seemed to be exhausted. But the poems in BLUE WINDOW read like a gift the Muse has handed down to Indran Amirthanayagam."--Jaime Manrique "Indran Amirthanayagam is Euripides, Pirandello, Liza Minelli, Bart Simpson, Paul Gauguin in Polynesia, Tom (and Jerry) Brady, Pico della Mirandola, Neruda, Saint Augustine, Joe Namath, Joe Biden, Joe Walsh, Anne Sexton, Robert Lowell, Ozzie Osbourne, Clark Kent, Chance the Rapper, Josephine Baker, Benjamin Franklin, Dolly Parton, Pelé, Nelson Mandela, Cantinflas, Howard Hughes, Langston Hughes, Edna St. Vincent Millay, RuPaul, Allen Ginsberg, Banksy, Steve Jobs, Woody Guthrie, Walt Disney & Walt Whitman. One of the most undervalued poets of our times..."--Eduardo Espina "In BLUE WINDOW, Indran Amirthanayagam has developed a personal poetic cartography, a geography of dilated air in the shadows. The poetic voice evokes, conjures, and converses with people, moments, places... This volume is a book of farewells, dialogues interrupted by distance, but continued in these pages that were life and are now maps, logbooks of travel, of poetry."--Carlos Aguasaco
