Sandy lived and worked in South Africa between 1988 and 2003, years coinciding with some of the most tumultuous and significant events in the history of the nation, including the release of Mandela. Set against a background of profound political and social change, Sandy tells her personal story with honesty, passion, intelligence and humour. As a community development worker in the townships she witnessed the brutality of life under the apartheid regime yet at the same time she was bewitched by the uncrushable richness and vibrancy of the culture and traditions of the people, and the grandeur and beauty of the land. Her final choice was unavoidable, she left her marriage and the land she loved to return to Australia and begin a new life. This volume will look into some macro factors that have an impact on gender conceptualizations in China. First, China is a highly-centralized state with a one-party political system that is also an authoritarian strongman regime. They were upper middle class to high net worth individuals who showed their successes in juggling both as objects of moral suasion for other Chinese women in state-led publicity.
