Holiness! It must be the goal of every Christian who is serious about their relationship with God in the here and now and the blessed hope of seeing Him then in the hereafter and throughout eternity. Why are we so convinced of this? Because we believe the Word of God when it says, "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14). Repeat: without holiness, no man shall see the Lord. Can it be any plainer than that? It's a frightening thought, especially in today's society where most of us are far from living a holy lifestyle. This may be because we hope God will judge us all on the curve, but it's probably because of an unfounded teaching among many Christians that simple belief in Christ's death and resurrection qualifies them as holy in the sight of God-no further action required; they are eternally secure. This erroneous teaching could cost souls their heavenly rewards, if not their eternity with Christ. In Holiness we try to discount and disprove that false teaching and lay the groundwork (according to our understanding of God's Word) for the model walk before God, a walk that ensures we will see God when this current reality ends but also our only real hope in these troubled times that, we believe, are a prelude to the Great Tribulation, the end of time, and the return of Jesus Christ.

"Holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord." These words mean something. They do not mean several things. They do not mean a variety of things. They do not mean what I would like for them to mean. But they do mean something, and it is important, even urgent, that we come to a precise understanding of what the Holy Spirit is saying to us. We were fashioned by the hand of God and quickened to life by His own Spirit, thus there is something in every man that yearns to know Him. Much of religion, world-wide and age-long, has, beneath all the trappings, been a quest of the human spirit for God. I believe this is the case, from ancient pagan rituals to modern expressions of "worship." We were fashioned by the hand of God and quickened to life by His own Spirit, thus there is something in every man that yearns to know Him--unless that innate yearning has been smothered by opposing influences. There is also an inbred consciousness, even fear, that we are accountable to this God (however we may define Him) for the life we have lived in this world. Romans 2:14-16 makes this clear. This is what the Apostle calls the "holiness without which no man shall see the Lord." Modern concepts of holiness, even within the Church, distort or fall far short of this ..".holiness." Unlike the attempts of "religion" to address this need, there is nothing either negative or onerous about it. It is both a demand and a gracious provision from the hand of a holy God!

We must he holy on earth before we die, if we desire to go to heaven after death. If we hope to dwell with God for ever in the life to come, we must endeavour to be like Him in the life that now is. We must not only admire holiness, and wish for holiness: we must be holy. We must be holy, because this is the only sound evidence that we have a saving faith in Christ. “Faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.” “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also” (James 2:17,26). We must be holy, because this is the only proof that we love the Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. What can be more plain than our Lord's own words? “If ye love Me, keep my commandments.” “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me.” (John 14:15,21). We must be holy, because this is the only sound evidence that we are God's children. “As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” “Whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God” (Rom. 8:14; I John 3:10). Lastly, we must be holy, because without holiness on earth we should never be prepared and meet for heaven. It is written of the heavenly glory, “There shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie” (Rev. 21:27). St. Paul says expressly, “Without holiness no man shall see the Lord” (Heb. 12:14). Ah, reader, the last text I have just quoted is very solemn. It ought to make you think. It was written by the hand of inspired man: it is not my private fancy. Its words are the words of the Bible: not of my own invention. God has said it, and God will stand to it: “Without holiness no man shall see the Lord.” What tremendous words these are! What thoughts come across my mind as I write them down! I look at the world, and see the greater part of it lying in wickedness; I look at professing Christians, and see the vast majority having nothing of Christianity but the name; I turn to the Bible, and I hear the Spirit saying, “Without holiness no man shall see the Lord.”
